Trip #2 under my belt, and thinking of where to stay on #3. I apologize for the long-winded report, and have broken it down into multiple pieces in case it's simply too much for people to read. I do a lot of my writing in the "stream of thought" method, and although it may seem rambling, it conveys my true feelings and thoughts a lot better. If you don't want me to post the rest of the trip, please let me know.

Day 1: (Sunday)
At the airport by 3:00AM for the 6:10AM flight to POP. No sleep. Typical flight down via Skyservice. Crappy movie, (not even worth pulling out my headphones) food standard. No view due to almost 100% cloud cover the whole way, and with a headwind, ended up arriving 1/2 an hour late. (Tough when you're flying into paradise!) Fairly long wait at immigration and baggage - took about an hour to get out on the street. Bus ride into Cabarete fairly uneventful.

Check in. Viva Wyndham Tangerine. Fairly smooth, but as it was 11AM, the room wasn't ready yet. Gave the wife and I our AI bands and told us to come back about 2PM. No problem... Gave me plenty of time to get reacquainted with the bar ;)

2PM comes, room was ready. Room 1313. After hearing about the phantom sewage smells at this resort as being the biggest problem, I got my first whiff of it while walking to the room. It's really not a huge deal as some people have made it out to be, and seems to creep around different areas of the resort. Never really smelled it for more than a second or two at a time. Not once did I smell it in the room.

Room was small, but I didn't fly down to sit in a hotel room. I do feel sorry for people who end up sick and holed up in their room though, as the television only had 5 or 6 English channels, none of them really that great.

Wife and I took our first walk down to Cabarete after lunch. She was a bit jumpy, as it was her first true taste of being outside a resort in a foreign country in her life. (I'll have her asking for me to find a nice condo to rent instead of the AI's eventually) Was a bit humorous - especially crossing the street the first couple of times. Walked back down the beach, stopping at a couple of bars for Presedentes and a snack at one. (much better food than the resort eventually I found)

Fairly early night for us, as we had not gotten any sleep the night before.

Day 2: (Monday)
Walked along the beach with the wife towards Sosua. Went a KM or two before we turned back. No better feeling than having a nice walk with the one you love with warm water lapping at your bare feet. Ended up extending the walk back into Cabarete, and did another beach bar crawl back to the resort. Lounged around in the pool for a while after we got back, and then went on a mission to try all the drinks on the menu. I am unsure if I made it, but it is possible.

Day 3: (Tuesday)
Sosua Day! I had previously arrainged to meet up with Gille that I had met the week before leaving on the forums here at Rocky's. Left the hotel about noon and headed down to Sosua. Walked along the main drag on the beach, and found my camera battery totally dead. Bah, no pics of the beach or shops at all for me! Stopped into Margaritas bar on the strip as recommended by other members here and got a Presedente. The wife asked for a Pina Colada, and was totally impressed by the sheer amount of effort that went into building this drink. Our server cut the top off a fresh pineapple, hollowed it out, mixed the drink, and served it beautifully adorned. It must've taken her 10 minutes of work, and the wife was amazed at the taste. (I tried it - it really was good!) Took me another beer before the wife finished hers, and when I was presented with the bill was SHOCKED at what seemed like a far too low price for such great service. 250 or 300 pesos. Walked away with 500 pesos less than when I entered, as it really was worth the tip.

Wandered around aimlessly through Sosua trying to find Rocky's until I ended up giving up and going to the main drag, and hanging a left at the Texaco like I remembered reading here before my trip. Found it fairly quickly after we did that. During our travels, some guy sitting in a chair holding a fairly large shotgun asked me for a smoke. Who was I to argue? I gave him TWO! lol! (He wasn't intimidating - it was totally friendly, but a funny story for a guy from Canada whose country bans almost every weapon imaginable)

Walked in, and was given a friendly greeting from Ted (Who should be called the purveyor of pain - see report for tomorrow for more info) After about 1/2 hour, we ended up meeting up with Gille and her friend. (and driver) Great people, and we all ended up drinking a hell of a lot. Rocky's world famous ribs were served, as well as a plate of wings. It may have been the alchohol, but I have to say they were the best tasting things in the world at the time. They really do live up to the hype! I apologize to all the other DR1 peeps that were sitting next to us - I suspect we got a bit loud during the time we were there. I have a feeling you guys go through this ritual quite often. The wife got into the "secret" China White shooters. I did try one, and they really are pretty tasty, although I suspect they would likely be illegal to sell in Canada.. heh Ted and Marco let me plug in my camera to charge it up. A couple pics: (More to come)
The Wife, Ted, and Myself
Gille enjoying the Ribs
Our gracious neighbours who put up with us

Cab ride back to Caberete was interesting. Pitch black, driver all over the road. I'm glad I was loaded. I don't actually remember it, but from a series of very odd, angled pics at the resort leading up to this one: it looks like I wasn't actually done for the night. It's not like me to binge like that, so I was a bit shocked once looking at the pics the next day.
You're gonna be hurting tomorrow

Day 4: (Wednesday)
Recovery from Sosua day. Very painful. We were supposed to meet Gille in Cabarete at 1PM, but didn't end up finding the place we were supposed to meet until 1:15. No Gille in sight. After waiting around for a while, we went to Liquidation World and grabbed souvineirs for the folks back home. Not bad prices, and ended up with a huge bag of swag for a couple thousand pesos. As it was recovery day, didn't do much else but lounge about and nap in various places.

Day 5: (Thursday)
Wife and I lounged about the pool, I did some boogie boarding and kayaking, the wife did some dance lessons and other hotel supplied activities, and we just hung out. Quite a relaxing day acutally. Walked down to Cabarete again and aimlessly wandered around. Spent a lot of time people watching, as there really are some interesting characters to watch.

Day 6: (Friday)
Ocean World day. Having been there once before on our previous trip, I knew what to expect. As the wife wasn't in the middle of having a case of sunstroke at the time, it ended up being a lot more interesting and relaxing. She did the Dolphin encounter again, while I did the general admission route. (Dolphins don't really interest me - I couldn't justify paying an extra $50 to kiss one)

The encounter really does seem like the much better deal. You get up close and personal with the dolphins, and actually get more time with them. The people who started the dolphin swim at the same time as her encounter were gone 10 minutes before she was done. It seems much more "intimate" anyway - rather than having them jump over you, drag you around, etc, it had her kissing, dancing, and feeding them.

Relaxed in the Tiger grotto for an hour or so. It almost seems like a hidden gem of Ocean world. Floating around relaxing in a beautiful pool while you have a gorgeous white tiger 10 feet from you is an experience that can hardly be explained. The bird aviaries are pretty cool, and got a good laugh when walking into the lovebird cage. There was at least 3 pairs that I immediately saw that seemed madly in love. They were quite vigirous about it as well ;)

Did the other standard Ocean world fare: Snorkel reef, (fun and beautiful) Sea lion show, (Got a picture with one resting his head on my shoulder) Stingray encounter, (weird looking) and the Shark encounter. (Cheesy - they make it all big and scary, and take advantage of peoples fears. They are Nurse sharks - hardly Great Whites!)

Got back to the hotel and went to our reservation at the Mexican a la carte. Ended up getting seated beside a couple from New Jersey who the wife had done some Merengue lessons with on Thursday.

The margiritas that I have seen being mentioned before on these forums do live up to their name. They really were pretty good! (All 4 of them... heh) We all ended up hitting it off quite well and partied until the bar closed. Great people, and hopefully won't be the last time we meet up. We really had a great time, although we were a bit dissapointed that the next day was...

Day 7: (Saturday)
Booo! Day we go home! Hotel checkout is 1PM, but our flight wasn't until 9:45PM back home. Did the checkout thing, and stuck our bags with the porter. They did leave the AI bands on, so we still had AI privledges at least. Spent most of the day lounging around, trying to soak up and burn into my eyeballs the beautiful sights. Walked down into Cabarete one last time for some last minute souveniers, lunch, and to say goodbye. (for now)

Bus to pick up everyone for the airport was supposed to be there at 5:30. At 6:15, with no word on when it was arriving, the wife and I decided to grab a cab that was sitting across the street at the Esso station. One last blast of fun before leaving we figured. He got us there so quickly that by 7:10PM, we were through checkin, security, immigration, duty free shopping, paid the departure tax, and was sitting at the bar by the gate. (The group we left behind started arriving at the gate about 9PM by the way) Being the type of person I am, I was glad to have the extra time to relax without any worries about delays, and was quite content to chill with a few beers.

Flight home pretty uneventful, but when we arrived, ended up waiting what seemed FOREVER for our bags to arrive. Customs was boring, and even though I declared everything, they simply waved us right through without even checking our bags. I was a bit surprised at this, as I declared 1.5L of alchohol (You're allowed 1.14L of liquor duty-free) and 200 cigarettes AND a box of cigars (Allowed one OR the other)

Out on the street, there was a HUGE line of probably 400+ people waiting for cabs. In the past hour, 2 flights from Punta Cana, 1 from Montego Bay, and 1 from Varadero had also arrived. At 3 in the morning, the cabs were few and far between. Wife and I hoofed it off the airport property (a good 15 minute walk) and within minutes had a normal cab pick us up. Ended up being at least 25% cheaper than an airport cab anyway.

Fast forward a few days to reflect, and the above is born and posted for all to see.

Afterthoughts:
Overall, it was a fantastic trip. Although touristy, Cabarete and Sosua were great places to initiate the wife outside the walled resorts. She truly enjoyed the trip, and will likely be much more adventerous the next time we go down.

The weather was absolutely FANTASTIC the entire time we were there. Other than a late night storm that I remember, (when we were already back in the hotel room) it did not rain once.

Neither of us got the "Puerto Plata splatta" the entire time, (The wife got it for a few days last time at the Grand Flamenco from some bad soup) and we were careful enough with the sun that neither of us got seriously burned. (Again, the wife last time ;))

The "Loft Disco" at the resort - STAY AWAY!!! It is situated in the basement of the main building, and has some serious mildew problems. After 5 minutes down there, we had to leave as our lungs were hurting. There is the potential for some lung problems if you stay down in that place. It absolutely reeks, and the air is likely filled with all sorts of spores and other nasty stuff.

Can't wait to head down again, and although we'll likely still be going the AI route, (it's just so darn cheap!) I doubt we'll be spending much time at whatever resort we're at except to sleep. I'm even planning on learning some more Spanish before I go down next time so I can get even better acquainted with the locals.

Thanks again Dominican Republic. You've got at least two more people hooked!

The look of sheer ecstasy says in one picture what hundreds of people have attempted to write in thousands of words.

Thanks

Thanks for the good words. Reports like yours are why DR1 forums are so helpful. Making our 1st trip in Dec and staying at Wyndham Tangerine.
Concerned about being there so close to Christmas, 13-23 Dec. Will places be closed?

You'll have a great time at the Viva Tangerine. The next time I book a full trip down to the Dominican Republic, I will likely stay there again. Even with the shortcomings I outlined, It really was a great trip. Being so close to town gives the best of both worlds - the AI luxury, as well as the easy option to get off the resort.

If you have any specific questions (from the point of view of another D.R. newbie - they may be helpful though), I would be more than happy to answer them either here or in Private messages.
