In 20 years I have never seen or heard of fish farming in the DR. It would be for fresh water fish I assume, which would get rid of the serious problems with salt water fish and ciguetera poisoning. Canadian Bob.

I know of a Taiwan fish and shrimp farm in Azua. Also there is a dorado fish farm in Salinas, a short walk from the Salinas High Winds Center hotel. If you are in the DR, consult with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Junta Agroempresarial Dominicana that should have lists of producers. There should be a handful, at least.

Fish farming in Santiago

The Institute of Superior Agriculture in Santiago is looking into a fish farming project related to water quality. PM me if you would like a contact there. It is an amazing school!

There are something like 38 different member farms who raise tilapia, shrimp, etc in the DR. (There are also many others that have gone belly up - sorry, it's a fishy joke) There is an association for fish farms too - sorry I don't have a contact, but the Secretaria of Agriculture would know.

I saw one project near Bayaguana that was set up for 50 or 60 hectares, but they ran out of money. Many of the public reservoirs have had tilapia put in them, but are stunted because of overpopulations, but when religious holidays are celebrated, you can see good-sized tilapia everywhere in the cities for sale along the roads.

(canadian bob) i have banged around the world a lot, doing aquaculture, and
the last five years, we've been looking for a place to hang our hats in the
winter. we've gone to the D.R., for the past few years, and like it there.
i knew, there was aqua. going on down there, but did not know in what part.
when i'm on holidays, i do not like to do business. and i'm not always on the
net. i posted a note , months back, and then i went away for some time, and
if you want to have a yarn, come over to my email address.
bamirault@hotmail.com

right now, i'm not doing a lot, so i have time on my hands.
make sure if you respond, to put aqua. in the subject area, so i know its not
junk mail. i have to reply to some of the others that i got good info. from
them. regards bruce
