Considering a stay at RIU Merengue.Does anyone know what there is for shopping, restaurants, etc. within walking distance? Also where is this resort in relation to the Hacienda complex? Any other comments about the RIU Merengue would be appreciated.

Hi there, Les.

Check out the following page: www.debbiesdomincantravel.com (follow link below) where you will find plenty of reviews (17 all in all, most of them extremely positive) of the Riu Merengue. You could also try the resort database here on DR1.

Riu Merengue with its' sister hotel the Riu Mambo is set in the Bay of Maimon - on the North coast a bit away from Puerto Plata. The Hacienda Resort is in the Playa Cofresi area, also on the North coast in the PP vicinity.

I've been to the RIU Mambo in May. These two hotels are together in the middle of nowhere. There is a small shopping street with a very expensive juwelery and some souveniershops (very expensive as well).

Taking a taxi to Playa Dorado will cost you about 250 pesos one way and 400 two ways.

But the hotel is beautifull, so is the beach, so is the food and the entertainment. A great hotel to visit, but you can't walk out of the resort, because there is nothing but trees and a dark road for a few miles.

Enjoy anyway,

Alexandra

If you are looking for night life and shopping this is not the place for you. If you are looking for peace and quiet, R&R, in beautiful surroundings you can't go wrong with Riu merengue or Mambo.

I'm not absolutely positive but I think that I've seen buses from the RIU's bringing guests into puerto plata. It seems that they might offer return trips so you can visit the town without booking a city tour which takes you around town with scheduled and timed stops at the Amber museum, gift shops & etc. Haven't been to the RIU's but all reports are positive.
