Half the bank ATMs run dry on busy weekends in Hig?ey with lines over 20 minutes on Banco Popular. I think it might have something to do with the resort workers getting paid with direct deposit. On one Sunday last August, I hit six ATMs downtown and none had cash.

God help you if you try to get money out of an ATM during the weekend of Semana Santa in Sosua...

At the Scotia in Las Terrenas I have noticed you can bypass the 200RD$ fee. It sometimes would charge me, sometimes not. Turns out that if you type fast the software 'forgets' about the fee.

This sounds very suspect, typing fast on the ATM makes it forget to charge..... (April 1st)

In SFM at scotia ATM you can withdraw 2 times 10.000 pesos. in 500p. bills.

You are indeed correct.

It was clarified to me today that at all Scotiabank DR ATM's, the single transaction withdrawal is 10,000RD but you can make two such withdrawals daily making a daily allowance of 20,000RD (in 500RD bills). If the bank is running low on 500RD bills they will limit the withdrawal transaction to 5,000RD each time and you get 25 x 200RD bills.

They are still part of the same alliance just no free withdrawals anymore. It's not 200 pesos though with BofA, it's 3% of your withdrawal amount.

Scotiabank is a founding member of the Global ATM Alliance. When you’re travelling, you can use the ABMs of the international banks in the Alliance, and you’ll skip the surcharge and access fees.

The above is what Scotiabank states and it worked for me using a Barclays debit card in DR and other Caribbean countries at Scotiabank branches. Barclays, like BoA are part of the Global ATM Alliance.

I would incur 2.99% if I use a Barclays credit card. Is this the issue?

This is what Bank of America states:

Bank of America is a member of the Global ATM Alliance, a group of financial institutions that has created the world's first international ATM alliance.

Use your Bank of America ATM or debit card within the Global ATM Alliance to avoid the non-Bank of America usage fee for each withdrawal, transfer or balance inquiry,1 as well as the ATM operator access fee. An international transaction fee of 3% will apply when converting your currency.2 Only ATMs in the countries listed below are considered part of the Global ATM Alliance.

So, using your Bank of America card in a Scotia machine (when not taking out USD) you will be charged 3%. That's what happens each and every time I use the Scotia machine. Still cheaper than other ATMs, where I am charged a percentage plus a fixed fee.

Thanks Mauricio. I think you have clarified that clearly. You get interbank exchange rate and a small international exchange fee if not same currency and no othrr bank costs. As you say its a good deal for instant cash from your home bank. Are there any DR ATMs which issue us dollars as well as peso. In the islands one can draw EC or US
