Pay off

You are right. I was told, take that for what it's worth, that these guys pay off the gov for the ability to get away with it.

So what did the guard do...

let you pass or tell you to take a hike anyway.

Curious minds want to know.

When I stayed there in 2007 we went for a walk down the beach and the guard wouldn`t let us go by him without giving our room # and names...He said it was for insurance reasons and if anything happened to us beyond that point or insurance would not cover us.

I stayed there in November and I remember walking along the beach and when I got to the outskirts for the resort, along the beach, a security guard asked me to sign out and sign back in when I returned. I can understand your frustration with the security along the beach, but if they allow you on the beach, then you pretty much have access to the entire resort. Not that I have a problem with that, but they have security at the front gate of the resort, it makes sense for them to have security at the other points of access.

FYI--outside the resort, along the beach on the opposite side of the Plaza Indiana, is a hut with a dude selling sea shells. Really nice guy, nice shells, good price (I think).

I travel to La Yagua quite a bit to visit my favorite haunt on the beach, Coco Cabanas, on Playa Magente. If you walk over to Bahia Principie area the security guards will stop you claiming a private beach. Basically what they are doing is 'protecting' the all-inclusive guests from discovering that dinosaurs really are not roaming the island seeking unprotected flesh to consume.

I've found that spouting off a room number and name while continuing to walk with a purpose flusters them sufficiently that they let you pass. But there really isn't anything worth seeing there unless fat white gringo bodies baking in the sun is of interest to you.
