The Basílica Santo Cristo de los Milagros is in Bayaguana, Monte Plata. It was inaugurated a couple of years ago by the Dominican government. This is the largest basílica the DR government has built since it built in the 1970's the Basílica Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia in Higüey. I think the architects that designed the new basilica are Dominicans, contrary to the ones that designed the basilica in Higüey who were French.

The Dominican that very recently did an extensive tour in the video below (this is probably the most extensive tour of this basilica in English) himself lived in Canada for many years and this year returned to the DR with his Canadian wife and Dominican-Canadian kids. He describe it as stunning despite he not being religious. He describes the architecture of the place as very beautiful, in fact he says it's the most beautiful church he has ever visited in the DR. He also says there is nothing like seeing it in person and that place alone makes it worth it to go to Bayaguana.

As with most Catholic churches in the DR, this one was built by the Dominican government with part of the taxes everyone pays. Might as well go and see it since very likely you helped pay for it. lol He does says that even the non-religious like himself would find going to Bayaguana to see this worth it due to the impressive nature of its architecture and size.

He viaited from Santo Domingo Este and the trip took him about 1:30 hours.

The basilica is already showing the effects of the rain and humidity of the area's climate. Go there before it gets worse. They should had painted the basilica black, at least on the outside. lol

Like when the basilica in Higüey was inaugurated in the 1970's, this one was built on the outskirt of the town. With time it will grow all around, making this landmark now on the outskirts within the built city.

The inside still looks as good as when it was inaugurated. Look at the floor!

The statue of Christ by the main entrance was sculpted from a single tree that fell in the area.

The amateur tour starts at 0:44.
