New and reelected deputies and senators put on their best resort wear and headed to a Cap Cana resort in the East for a four-day immersion course, Transformative Legislative Leadership last week.

The course was organized by the Foundation for Institutionalism and Justice (Finjus) in collaboration with the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, and was moderated by Senate president Ricardo de los Santos and Chamber of Deputies president Alfredo Pacheco, both experienced legislators who represent the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). The PRM has the absolute majority in both houses for the 2024-2028 legislature.

The president apparently has put his foot down concerning the lack of filing sworn affidavits by all politicians as has happened in the past.

Deputies accuse the Chamber of Accounts of excessive requirements

Several deputies consider that the Chamber of Accounts is being excessive and even acting with "revenge" by demanding too many requirements for the presentation of sworn declarations of assets. Therefore, they request that the procedures be simplified and an extension be granted to complete the documentation, due to the extensive paperwork required.
Pedro Martínez, Tony Bengoa and Junior Muñoz, three deputies from the ruling party, agree in their discontent. Martínez, from Alianza País, points out that some colleagues see an "excessive zeal" on the part of the Chamber of Accounts, which could be trying to rehabilitate itself after having been the object of criticism. He questions the fact that the Chamber reviews passports and credit card expenses unnecessarily, and advocates for a simpler process, where the law is complied with without so many obstacles.
Bengoa, for his part, mentions the complications he has had in gathering the necessary documents, highlighting that he has 39 siblings and that he is required to present the data of all of them and their spouses. He also proposes a simpler declaration and emphasizes that any certified public accountant could handle it without problems.
Junior Muñoz joins the request for an extension, arguing that one month is not enough to meet all the requirements. He stresses that obtaining the letter from the bank has been particularly difficult and that, being his first term, the process has been complicated for him, as he is constantly asked for new documents.
