A few of us will be vacationing in Puerto Plata next week (Dec 6-13). We are pretty serious dancers who loves bachata and salsa. I, myself actually prefer bachata.

Anyway, we're hoping to go into town a couple of times for some dancing (authentic Bachata, salsa, etc.)

Does anyone have a recommendation about specific clubs/bars/musicians, good ways to get into town and back to our resort safely and without spending a fortune?

authentic Bachata
There is only authentic bachata in the DR. It is other countries who dance modified forms of it. With salsa, it is the other way round.

not to be a killjoy but please stay on topic. OP asked for places to dance bachata/salsa not about social reality of DR.

I actually only dance the authentic/traditional way, keep it simple and smooth but I do see your point and perhaps, I should have left the "authentic" part out. What I meant was that we wanted the chance to dance with some of the locals and you cannot get any more authentic than that.

Salsafan and BelgianMik...thank you for the suggestions. Hopefully, we'll get to check all of those places.

I would have said, not so long ago, maybe Rancho Tipico, Classico, El Toro, and basically anywhere with loud music or,in the event of a seismic event, El Flow, but:

Our wondrous administration has decided that all forms of self and communal amusement are evil and sinful so s far as Sosua goes,
Maybe try Cabarete?

Or a sedate waltz with Rap in Rumba?

OOps!
You said Puerto Plata.
Sorry. I'm a Sosua denizen and never venture that far...

But it used to be brilliant here.....

There's also the Rancho Tipico in PP. Quite good for merengue. Think they have open only for concerts, hard to get Dates of the Events.
