I am going to visit Rio San Juan in December. How is the best way to call Canada from there? My children will, likely, have to check in with their father a time or two. Any suggestions?

It depends on where you're staying.
If it's at a big resort, the phone calls may be quite expensive.
Can the kids stay in touch by internet instead?
Could you buy a cheap cellphone for in and out going calls?
Are you staying at someone's house, who has a phone?
There may also be call centers near where you are staying.

PS: I see now from your other post that you are going to an AI resort.
There will be possibilities for making phonecalls from the resort, although it may be quite expensive.

If you are at a resort or a place where you know the phone number beforehand, have a prearranged signal with dad, then he can phone you back and pay Canadian long distance rates, which with bell are 17 cents per min to the DR. we DO ALL THE TIME.

Have you considered e-mail instead? Can the kids "keep in touch" that way? it'll probably be a lot more reasonable.

If you all have computers look into Skype, I talk from the DR to the states often using that service for free!

Cheapest is SKYPE

By using skype ( free download) you call to anyother skype user for free and to mobile phones and landline phones for approx. 2cents a minutes.

Skype

I'll add my two cents on Skype - I use it all the time. When I have called a non-Skype number in Los Angeles, I've spent ~$2.00 for a two-hour call - very reasonable. Good luck.
