Big business pressures government to cut taxes on aviation and shipping fuels

Industry & Commerce Minister Victor (Ito) Bisono told reporters that the Dominican Republic in the medium term should see its logistic centers becoming hubs for the resupply of aviation and shipping fuels. The service, contained in Decree 148-22, is so that any airplane or freighter that lands or docks in the Dominican Republic be able to take on fuel at international prices. The plan is part of turning the DR into a logistics hub that the Minister says will require other services such as repair facilities and food service.

Bisono recently met with members of the Dominican Republic Association of Industries (AIRD). Taxes on aircraft and freighter fuel were discussed in the light of the Decree 148-22 and other measures.

AIRD members argue that 30,000 freighters cross by the coasts of the Dominican Republic every year, and very few of these stop here to take on fuel.
