A few days ago Mr Velutini (the Venezuelan naturalized as Dominican founder and owner of the Blue Mall brand) took a photo with a bunch of other investors. It turns out this was the initial shoveling act for the construction of the Green One Playa Dorada in Puerto Plata. This will be touristic complex that includes residential within the Playa Dorada complex where the Puerto Plata Village Resort used to be. It was at this event that the possibility of building a Blue Mall Puerto Plata is currently in the works.

Its not clear if the new mall will have the Blue Mall name or another name. The concept is of an open air mall with restaurants/shops/etc and two anchor stores (no details what these two anchor stores will be). Knowing how Velutini operates the Blue Mall Santo Domingo and the Blue Mall Punta Cana, expect all sorts of activities throughout the year to attract customers and families from the area. So far all their malls in the DR tend to be geared to the upper and upper middle classes plus tourists, so this one will probably be the same.

The Central Bank, owner of the Playa Dorada complex, is still in negotiations with Velutini’s company to make this mall a possibility.

As of right now there are no renders about the mall, either because they are being made at the moment or they are done but not shown to the media yet.

This will be the third Blue Mall in the DR. The first Blue Mall in the DR open in Santo Domingo and for many years remained as the most luxurious mall in the Caribbean, now it has been relegated to second place with the opening of The Mall of San Juan in Puerto Rico. A second Blue Mall was opened in Saint Martin only to close a few years later. Another Blue Mall was opened in Punta Cana and is still open. On top of Blue Mall Santo Domingo is a glass tower of class A offices and a JW Marriott, considered the most expensive hotel in any Dominican city. Next to Blue Mall Santo Domingo they are building several luxury residential towers and a World Trade Center tower which will be for more class A offices. That one will have the most spectacular modern design of any office building in the DR.

Does anyone remember when Blue Mall Santo Domingo opened?

The 4th floor had at least 20 businesses in the food court. Almost all of them closed at the end of their lease. It was good while it lasted.

People need to start taking responsibility for making too many children

I think they've come a long way. I've met many, many persons who come from a family of 10 or more siblings.

I'm guessing it's dropped considerably in the last 2-3 decades.

What I'd really love to see is fewer single mothers. I think the DR leads in that category.

I wonder how Puerto Plata fits into their target market of middle to upper class.

Looks like around 2012. But I can see why those businesses closed. Most of the mall clientele dines at the restaurants on the first level which are always full and buzzing.

The fourth floor is basically a ghost town now!

Didn't they have a Hard Rock Cafe up there? Or did Covid sink it?

Surprisingly it survived but I don't think because of people dining. It gets pretty packed on the weekend when there are concerts there.

The SBG on the 1st floor does very well though. I think people go there to be seen there, and they are obviously far more visible on the 1st floor than hidden away on the 4th. Dominicans with money like everyone to see how much money they have.

DR is up there for sure but I think Baltimore & Detroit likely lead in that category.

Hold on! There's an SBG on the first floor? I only know of Outback Steakhouse.

There is an SBG in Downtown Center that is excellent.
