Boca Chica or No Bo Chica

Hello All:

I just spoke with a buddy of mine who recommends that I go to boca chica while I am visting SD. I will be in SD for 13 days. How far away is Boca Chica? - How much does it cost to go there by taxi? or is there a less expensive way to get there? - Should I plan to stay overnight or 2? - What is going on there? Other than beaches, what is there? - Is there a website or link that has good information and photos about boca chica:laugh: ? - Thanks

I guess you haven't been to Boca Chica in many years?
It's nothing like you described CC and has changed a lot in the past 5 years.
If your looking for girls, you are wasting your time going to BC.

Take a look at Boca Chica Beach Dominican Republic for info.

I guess a taxi will cost you RD$700-800 pesos depending on your Spanish skills and who you ask.

Be sure to check out Playa Vista Bar when you go to BC, great place to hang out for the day. They also have a very active blog here on DR1.

Boca chica is pretty easy to get to. and it is certainly not as seedy as stated above.

Sure there are still working girls there...but it sure aint the bacanal like it used to be.

The beach is clean..the water shallow and tranquil...not the best beach on the isla...but it is the closest to S.D. and it aint bad (i am going to be there next week).

NIghtlife is pretty dull. There is one hooker disco...and the other few blocks are just people hanging out having presidentes etc.

The beac in BC is pretty quiet durring the week. But on sunday it is fiesta central when the folks from Santo Domingo come out to party (unfortunately they all go home as the sun sets). I would suggest staying either saturday & sunday...or sunday & monday.

Yes, Boca chica has changed a lot in the past 5 or 6 years, BUT one old advice still applies: DON'T GO SWIMMING AT BOCA CHICA ON A MONDAY !

The best time is to go to Boca Chica is on a Sunday afternoon, when it's busy, drink a Presidente or two (or three) in the shade, watch the girls in their swimsuits, and then go back to Santo Domingo, or wherever else.

Keep in mind that...

Boca Chica, is one of three places in the entire DR with the highest crime rate (the others are Villa Mella in SD, and Villa Altagracia).

The waters of Boca Chica beach are poluted (don't take my word for it, take a cheap swimming pool test kit, and check it yourself...)

Ever hear of "Coney Island whitefish"? Same thing, along with "whatever else" people put or do in the ocean at Boca Chica on Sundays. Because Boca Chica beach is inside a large reef, it takes a couple of days to rinse itself out again.

Mirador. I am going to BC on wednesday for the 7th time. I have never ever had a problem there (tho i do think with my head and sorta got a feel for the place). THe only time i heard of something bad happening to a tourist was when a gringo got jumped at an ATM at 2 am in the morning. I only go out at night with what money i will need for the evening...and not once have i been hassled...even when weaving my way up the hill to either candil or costalunga at whatever hour in the morning.

I really have never seen much polution in the water. Granted...sundays are crowded (but really fun) and lord only knows what the kids are letting loose in the water. But even with the reef there is a decent current to move things along.

To me...boca chica is just a place to park my half gringo ass in the sun and warmth in feb or march....no..not the greatest beach in the carib....but it sure beats nyc when its 20 F here!

AND i like the fact that i can go into SD if i want to when i get tired of the beach and tourists and do some other things.

Go for a day or two...that'll probably be enough for the OP.

I think I may be scared...

Not really scared for my safety, but not sure if I want to deal with a bunch of Tourists.... I wanted to go to check things out. Wanted to look around enjoy some sun for a couple of hours. check out the sites (for me, its the men) and then have some fun and return to SD. this is my 4th time SD in 2 years. I think I have found what i am looking for when I go to SD. If BC has better sights for what I am looking for then perhaps i'll try it. If not, then I will just keep my good ole American but in SD doing my thing. Thanks Jrzy - you always have the right advice.

Boca Chica or Santa Domingo

I am going to the Dominican for the first time next week. I booked my hotel for the first night in Santa Domingo. I will will wait to get their before booking a hotel for the next 2 nights. I was interested in going to Boca Chica. What Hotels are girl friendly. I only have 3 nights and want to make the most of it. Can somone make some recommondations for me?

Boca Chica is very close to the airport. You can get there by bus from SD for 50 pesos. I passed it a couple of times, does not look bad. As I understand this beach is good for swimming but don't leave anything that belongs to you unattended outside

the bus is actualy 40 pesos from the cap.

The beach is fine...if you go to the beach..got to playa de sol...and ask for william....if you buy a couple of beers or juices and a fruit plate...they wont charge for the chair and will look after your stuff.

BC is quieter than it used to be. and everything closed PROMPTLY at 12 am. I dont travel for the sex trade...but there seems to be enough going on for both guys and girls looking for some. JUST USE PROTECTION!!!!!!

I will be posting a full trip report over the weekend about boca chica, juan dolio and my trip to the capital soon (including my comments on the new administration at candil).

Oh..and btw...the dominican woman at the airport asked me if i enjoyed my stay in the "domincan".

Hey Jrzy - Thanks for your comments. They are always great. let me know which hotel is Guy Friendly...... Please post your full - report so that we can all get the goods on the scene there. Also, while in SD, if you could give me a good report on a hostel called Maison Gauteaux. I will be there for 14 days and I am not sure if I need to bring my own linnen and towels. If you can give me a report on this, that would be great. Thanks again.

Boca Chica is fine....I'm a gringo, stayed at El Candil....take a walk down Duarte and have a good time...you'll see a ton of pros....if that's what you want take your pick.....otherwise, just stroll thru town, smile a lot and find someone who meets your fancy....be nice...and I guarantee you'll be BOCAfied......these morons on DR1 who tout it to be "not like it used to be" or "just full of hookers" have not been anywhere else in the world.....

The DR is what you make it and the people are great.....like anywhere else, pay attention to your surroundings....and as I have learned in my global travels....an empty beer bottle is a great detrator to those who wish you ill harm.......drink up, walk wisely, HAVE FUN!

I'm coming back to SD in June, meeting a cool girl I met inBC in January...she understands my deal and understand hers.......bottom line is....it beats any BS you'll have at home with a sig other..........
