Hey folks.

I'm a early-thirty something guy traveling alone to the north coast from February 21-March 1. Flying in and out of PP. I am a bit torn about where to stay - Cabarete or Sosua. I plan on spending a few days SCUBA diving, renting a motorbike and seeing the country, surfing a bit, doing the waterfalls, and heading out at night. I am also considering heading out to the Samana for a night or two for some quiet and whales, if it makes sense.

Any advise on which town to stay in and which hotels are good, especially in Cabarete? In Sosua, Rocky's seems like my kind of digs. I would love a kitchen, but don't care much about the place beyond it being clean, friendly, well located, and have enough space to practice yoga every day. I have traveled quite a bit, though this is my first time in the DR. I speak Spanish very well and I'd like to meet locals (as well as other tourists) and experience as much of the culture as I can. Does it make sense to book a place for a night then search around, given the dates? Is Carnival going to fill up the hotels?

Also, I've tried to contact Easy Rider about a bike but haven't heard back. Any other places? Also, I was wondering if I should bring an unlocked cell or buy a cheap one to use. Does this make sense? A final thing, I've read a bit about the $ vs the peso... Will I need USD anywhere? I assume I can take pesos out at the ATMs. I'm just trying to gauge how many greenbacks to take along. I've traveled with a lot of cash before and never had any problems (I'm a pretty big guy, and pretty careful), but don't love the idea of worrying about $500 cash all the time.

Thanks for all the help, and if anyone is looking for someone to hang out with during those dates, let me know!

Try staying in a place that offers you a safe for your documents, money, and valuables, which Rocky's does. Rocky's hotel rooms have no kitchen, while his condos do. You can send him a private message for more details.

If you already have an unlocked cell phone, bring it, and hook it up via Orange or Claro. I brought my own unlocked cell phone and hooked it up via Orange, located near Banco Popular.

Sosua has the more exciting and rowdy nightlife, but Cabarete is a good alternative, as it's a bit more laid back. If you're looking to drink and chase women, go with Sosua. ;)

You should probably bring enough cash to cover your lodging expenses, as those, generally, need to be paid when you check-in. You should also bring some extra spending money, maybe enough for the first day or two. The rest of your money can be accessed via the ATM machines located in and around Sosua: Banco Santa Cruz, Scotia Bank, Banco Popular, etc. Bring more than one card, just in case something happens, such as you lose it or it gets eaten up by the machine. Be sure to let your bank know you might be using your cards while on vacation in the Dominican Republic.

Hi Mugsy,

If you decide to go out Samana way, you might like to stop by us on the way!! It's a nice way of breaking up the drive, and you'll see some wonderful, unspoilt coastline.

Look forward to seeing you.

Mugsy,
For centrally located, decent accomodations in Cabarete...

Look at Condominios Cita del Sol - Cabarete - Dominican Republic or Hotel Kaoba.
With Cita del Sol you'll get a kitchen with stove/oven. Kaoba, I'm not sure.

Cita del Sol would fit your needs. Price is about $60/night. Nice pool area for your yoga or you can always go across the street to the beach.

Kaoba may have some cheaper options... and is located right next to Cita del Sol.

Sans Souci has some inexpensive units as well. Not sure of a link to their webpage.

Another last minute idea... http://www.hotel-alegria.com

I gave someone the same advice on north coast area

;)On your way to Samana, stop at playa grande beach, about 10 minutes after Rio san juan. I have a place in Cabrera (1.5 hours from sosua), small town. Playa Grande (15 minutes west of cabrera) is one of the most beautiful beaches in the central north coast and there are more beaches around.
In Cabrera, there is a beach called El Caleton de Cabrera. It's a beautiful beach to go snorkling and swimming. There is a rich lady that cleans up the beach (her workers, hahaha) every day. It's awesome, no one selling you stuff, no crowds and clean. You ask where Orchid Bay is, there is a side road, beside there private entrance of there community. There are small not expensive hotel in that town if you spend the night, if you need contact names, let me know.
You can take a public bus, it will cost you almost nothing, maybe around $250 pesos. Just get some info on the prices. good luck;) or wit you bike.
P.S. Get out and enjoy the real DR
