I think "ccarabella" missed a few of the taxes.....
$147 U.S. is the same I have calculated in the past round trip from STI.

Which by-the-way was higher then the cost of the flight portion of the ticket of $141 U.S....

The OP is giving a break down of the taxes the Dominican Republic receives. If you add another $50-60 the USA gets the OP's figures are pretty much in order.

Okay, so let say it this way, as on-line they do not show a detail breakdown of the taxes.

Below I show taxes for three separate one-way flights:

(1) Miami to Santiago

Total Fare per Person : $92.00 USD
Additional Taxes and Fees per Person : $54.40 USD

(2) Santiago to Miami
Total Fare per Person : $92.00 USD
Additional Taxes and Fees per Person : $94.10 USD

NOW, for the real KICKER:

(3) Miami to JFK
Total Fare per Person : $94.00 USD
Additional Taxes and Fees per Person $10.70 USD

Taxes

For comparison of DR taxes ONLY, I tried to find a Domestic flight from say Santiago to Punta Cana, etc, but could not locate any.

Domestic Travel

* September 11th Security Fee of $2.50 per U.S. enplanement
* Airport passenger facility charges (PFCs) of up to $18 roundtrip
* U.S. government excise tax of $3.70 on each flight segment, defined as one takeoff and one landing
* For Hawaii/Alaska, U.S. government excise tax of $8.10

International Travel (including Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands)

* September 11th Security Fee of $2.50 per U.S. enplanement
* Airport passenger facility charges (PFCs) of up to $18 roundtrip
* Other government taxes and fees (including foreign taxes based on itinerary or billing address) of up to $180 USD may apply; total may vary slightly based upon currency exchange rate at time of purchase.

U.S. government excise tax is a user tax to pay for airport construction and airway safety and operations.

All sample fares were checked on July 20, 2010 for a one-way flight on October 1, 2010.

Old days

Does anyone remember the good old days, when you had to pay $20 US at the airport for the exit tax? It was not added onto the ticket, and it had to be paid before you could board your plane to leave the DR. Everyone had to pay it, and there was an insistence that it be paid in US funds. I was a college student then, and we were told to put that money back so that we would be sure to have it. No idea what would have happened if I hadn't had the money.

Looks like now the tax is put onto the ticket, but now there is the tourist card that has to be purchased on entering the country.
