you can try, wrap them really well and put them in the middle of a checked on luggage. If they check it and say anything just leave them there then. Ours came through fine.

Hi!
you guys have any idea how much damage they do to the coral reefs and under water wildlife just by harvesting these shells?

They are officially protected by law and the WWF.
Don't get me wrong but by buying these shells you sustain a demand for these precious items.

If you want a Dominican souvenir, buy the local art, it might just increase in value over time. Here in the Netherlands and all over Europe the traditional Dominican art is actually sold for 4 times the price you would buy it for...

Hope you have a great stay anyway!!!

We'll be taking off to Cabarete on Sunday for a good two weeks!

hi, thx for the feedback ...

the fact is, our little girl (who is 4) is coming with us and what do girls love best? right, collecting shells from the beach ...
so i am just asking this question not to get her heart broken :) that's all ...
so to me it's not about damaging the coral reefs or anything like that, it's just picking up shells from the beach ...

Hi Woezy,

picking up shells from the beach should cause no problems.
Indeed, tuck them away in between a couple of towels in your luggage and you should be fine.

My assumption was that you wanted to buy the big ones they take from the reefs. I'm sorry to have misread your post!

Have an amazing time!

i would think polution would be doing more damage to reefs than people picking up empty shells. Especialy if the shell has been abandoned by its original owner.

I've never seen many interesting shells on the beaches themselves. Just very very tiny shells (should no problem). I have a few lambi shells that friends have given me (not the big ones you see for sale). and a few star fish that we found (in the sand not the reef...again..pretty small) and dried out before leaving.

If i was snorkeling on a reef i would NEVER take a critter still in a shell
