Anybody seen Broccolini in Sosua grocery stores?

Steamed Broccolini With Honey Soy Sauce

About This Recipe

"From Taste.com - the original recipe included the use of 1 bunch of baby choy sum. if you wish to include this vegetable then separate the choy sum stems and add to the steamer for the last 1 to 2 minutes of steaming the broccolini."
Ingredients

2 tablespoons reduced sodium soy sauce
1 tablespoon honey
2 cm ginger ( fresh peeled and finely grated)
1 bunch Broccolini ( trimmed)
1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds

Directions

Combine soy sauce, honey and ginger in a jug and set aside.
Place a large steamer over a wok or large saucepan of simmering water (I use an electric steamer).
Place broccolini in steamer and cook covered for 6 to 7 minutes or until just tender and then transfer to a bowl.
Add sauce mix and toss to combine and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Rabe is closer to a turnip and much different taste. Broccolini first came out around 1999, it's a cross between broccoli and chinese broccoli. I haven't tried it yet but will be soon.

Broccoli is my go-to veggie when I'm veggie-deficient. This may replace it.

I eat broccoli and Rapini alot, really, to me, the only difference is that Rapini tends to be a bit bitter. I fry my rapini in a pan with olive olive, Chili flakes and Salt, and just a hint of sugar to help with its bitterness, remove when fully wilted,

I've seen it in the supermarkets but it never looks fresh enough. If it's imported it will probably be too expensive.

The few times I've seen broccoli served, it was cooked about the same as pasta here. I can't even find frozen peas at Iberia.

I'd like to see baby kale, but I'm not hopeful.

Ok, for you Broccoli lovers...My daughter made this one night and we all love it. The key is not to rush making it and NOT cut the broccoli too big. They have to be smaller bite sized chunks. It is delicious.

"Broccoli raisin sunflower salad."
Ingredients

1 pound bacon
6 cups chopped broccoli
1 small red onion, finely chopped
1 cup raisins

1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1 (3 ounce) package sunflower seeds

Directions

Place bacon in a large skillet and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain the bacon slices on paper towels and cool. Chop bacon.
Mix broccoli, bacon, red onion, and raisins in a bowl.
Whisk mayonnaise, sugar, and vinegar together in a bowl; stir dressing into broccoli mixture until evenly coated. Cover bowl and refrigerate for flavors to blend, about 1 hour. Sprinkle salad with sunflower seeds.

For some unknown reason, broccoli tends to be a bit expensive. Even buying *from the veggie trucks in campo.
Well ok, not expensive per se, but overpriced compared to the rest of the veg.

Broccoli and cauliflower tend to be about 35 pesos a pound on the south coast from the stands. I buy lots of it when LaSirena has their 40% fruits and veggies day each week. That's about what it costs in the US too, with vastly higher salaries, so you're right about it being a bit expensive.

Broccoli goes limp fast in the heat. It's usually shipped packed in shaved ice in the US. Most Dominican produce sits out for days.

Broccoli 35/pound on sale or chicken at around 40...

Yes very nice broccoli at Super Pola in Sosua. I put it in boiling water for less than a minute and then douse it in cold water. It stays green and crunchy for several days and is great in a salad.

Exactly.
And I understand stuff like, say apples or grapes being expensive, as they imported/rare.*
But broccoli ? I just assume they grow it locally. But maybe not.

There again I do buy it off the trucks/pick ups ( i live in the campo ), because #1 i like it im my sunday roasts, and in my pasta dishes, and stuffed in chicken breasts with cottage cheese and wrapped in bacon..... well u get the idea, i like it.
and #2 *because i made a deal and when i buy broccoli, the guy gives me all the scraps of veggies ( pieces they trim off, wasted vegs....) for my chickens :) :)

The prices of a lot of veg ( and fruit ) has gone up quite a bit, due to the terrible rains of the past months. Carrotts, peppers, onions.....
