The new model Apache 200cc, in this country the most reasonable option, about U$3500, don't waste you time and money on anything else....

Do I need special driver license for motorbike in RD?
90% of Dominicans riding motorbikes don't have any driving licence of any kind, and almost all foreigners riding here just show their home car driving licence to the police if stopped (if not in English, better have an international permit IDP), and that is fine - of course legal requirements is quite different....!

Thanks! I have valid Internation Driving Licence (Geneva Convention), so there should be no problem with driving. But I see that it is impossible to register car or motor without permitt to stay.

Do yourself a life-saving favor and do not buy a motor-bike.
Geneva Convention ?
If you need to pull that card out of your hat at a traffic stop, except the officer to spit up his chicken and rice.

Yeah! I think I rather buy or rent a car...

There two conventions: from Geneva and from Vien. Dominican Republic signed this from Geneva.

That "validation" of a license is useless here. It does nothing to extend the validity of foreign licenses to legally drive here.

Yes you need a real DR license and registration for your motorcycle and they both require being legally here with a valid cedula.

This is true regarding Dominicans and invalid foreign licenses, but recently is causing issues for those without the proper documents even in Cabarete Center. Hard to believe, I know. Some government initiative about being "legal" , even more hard to believe.

That is no longer correct. The government has made a big push and hundreds of thousands of motorcycles are now registered and the owners have driver licences.

The motorcycle depends on your use and time you want it to last/value. I am not a fan of any of the off brands- most have no value after they are a couple years old. For around $3500 US you can buy a Yamaha YTZ150- good fuel injected bike that will give you no problems (we have 2 of these). Honda also makes a CRF290L these run a little closer to $4k- these are new and I do not own one yet. We have 5 CRF230l-crf250l- some have 40k miles on them and they never give us any problems and are still worth what I paid for them originally (all imported). Maintaining your bike is key-- I've spent a lot of time with a local mechanic teaching him how to correctly do this--- this is how it has always been done does not make it right. Gl and enjoy- beautiful country!
