How are Canadian funds treated? Should I convert to US dollars before I leave here or convert to pesos in D.R.?

How do you know that changing from Cdn to DR Pesos is better? I'm from Ontario and I usually trade US traveller's cheques for DR Pesos using the Resort Bank. Do you have more details? Thanks.

Denise We normally take both Canadian and Americian Funds. Sometimes we have gotten a better exchange rate going from Canadian to Pesos, then from going from Canadian to Americian to Pesos, or Americain to Pesos. . Better to exchange once then twice. Although the Americain Dollar is widely used, there are still many places that only deal in Pesos. Best to check out what it would cost to go from Canadian to Americain to Pesos or From Canadian to Pesos. You can check this while in Canada. It's best done at a money exchange instead of just using the exchange rate due to handling charges not included in the exchange rates.

Best to take Canadian!
The last time we went to the Dominican we took only US currency.We had paid the high exchange and when we changed our US over to pesos, we were no farther ahead. I would recommend you take $100.00US(Just in case you want to take a tour and some tours are in American Money only and you will also need $10.00 US to leave the Dominican!)And you should take Canadian Currency for the rest! Have a great trip!

I agree with you. It would be another story if we were talking big money 2000$- 3000$. Right now in the D.R. 1$US= 15.80 pesos and 1$CN= 9.95-10 pesos. It takes about 152$-155$CN to have 100$US

I've never tried to travel to the D.R. on Canadian money alone but I can relate that I witnessed a retailer at Santo Domingo airport refusing to take Canadian money from an irate traveller. If the airport retailers who see thousands of Canadians a month won't take it, who else won't? Canadian $ may be fine if you plan on spending all your time in a resort, but I'm not sure about out in the 'Real World'.

Since 1991, I live in the D.R. 2 weeks in September, mid October-mid november, 2 weeks in January and mid March-mid June. I live with the people in the Real World and I never had problem travelling with Canadian money. I always pay in pesos though (except the departure tax, you can't even pay in pesos). I exchange $$ in a "casa de cambio". I travel with US money when the exchange rate worth it. Yes some won't take Canadian money especially at the airport but nobody will refuse the D.R. legal money=pesos. It's preferable to pay in pesos because in a "casa de cambio" you'll get more for the Cn or Us money than the retailers will give you. So US money could be necessary at the airport if you're out of pesos.

NO PROBLEMS WITH CHANGING CANDIAN CURRENCY!~
Whenever we have travelled to the Dominican we have NEVER encountered a problem with changing our CANADIAN currency to DOMINICAN at exchange booths or banks.Of course I would not go into a business or store and expect them to take Canadian Money.That is why we change our currency to pesos to begin with.Pesos are the Currency of the Dominican Republic! For what the Canadian Dollar is worth and how costly it is to change it to American-it makes you no further ahead-so take whatever makes you happy! For what the exchange would cost me -I will gladly spend in the Dominican anyways!

I don't doubt you can change Canadian funds or just about any other Western currency in the D.R., my point was that I believe many Canadian travellers may of expected that their money would be accepted by D.R. merchants and it won't be.

Just returned from the DR - stayed at the Barcelo Gran Lina and the rates at the exchange in the hotel were 15.75 (US) and 9.99 (Canadian). You be the judge, but the cost of exchanging once rather than twice makes the Canadian rate even that much better.
