yes anitadiaz it's safe, inexpensive, generally ontime and efficient. i've taken caribe tours many times and it the best mode of transport for me.

Caribe Tours doesn't serve the airport, though. You'll have to take a cab to the station in Santo Domingo for about 30 dollars.

Not to worry. Take a cab to either the Metro or the Caribe Tours depot and take a bus to Puerto Plata from there. I like Metro, they have better equipment and better maintenence. They are punctual.
According to the rumor mill, that bus was hit by stones that distracted the driver, causing the accidentl. No serious injuries...

- You will first have to figure how to get from the car rental into SD to find the bus station.
- If you survive that, and you try to follow the bus to POP and can keep pace with the busk you don't belong behind the wheel.
Anita: You are obviously a NEWBIE to driving in the DR. We have posted some very funny and some very tragic stories of driving here.
I would suggest you first do as we suggest: Take a taxi to the Metro or Caribe Tour bus station and then, when you are in Puerto Plata (where, exactly are you going?**) you can decide if you want to rent a vehicle.
** I ask this because while the province of Puerto Plata is quite large the city is rather small and unique in its history. However, many hotels advertize themselves as being in Puerto Plata, but are really in Maimon, Sosúa or Cabarete, or even somewhere in between...
THEREFORE, if you are going to Playa Dorada, no problem, take the Metro to Puerto Plata and then a taxi to your hotel.
However, if you are going further east, like Sosúa or Cabarete, you are best advised to take the Caribe Tour bus to Sosúa and then taxi to your hotel.
Remember, always ask and agree upon the price before any taxi ride. At the airport the going rates are posted, and I do believe that at the taxi stands in Puerto Plata and Sosúa they are posted as well.....

But to answer your question you will need to take a cab for about $25.00 to Caribe Tours Terminal on av 27 de Febrero..They have departures every hour starting at 6am with the last bus out at 7pm..Cost should be no more than 300 pesos.Their number is 809-221-4422..On the return the schedule is the same..I have used them numerous times all over the Island.The are Air Conditioned and play Merengue,Bachata,salsa music..They have an impressive safty record..And a good way to enjoy seeing the country without having to worry about being held up along the way or stopped by fake Police looking to rob you as you would expose yourself to driving a rental car..

I remember reading somewhere (a while back) to keep an eye on your suitcase in the luggage compartment of buses in DR, in case at the stops in between destinations they start walking... !?!
But I haven't heard anybody mentioning this recently, is this happen to anyone recently, or has anyone heard of this problem recently. When I used Caribe bus last year, at the stop at POP there were armed guards around the bus so I assumed it should be fairly good security (unless the guards are bent.....)

I took Caribe Tours from Sosua to Santo Domingo on November 5th. The cost was $250 RD. The ride is just about 4 hours. A very comfortable bus with great A/C. You get about a 15 minute rest stop in Santiago.
I have taken the bus twice with luggage and not lost a piece. In Sosua all luggage headed for Santo Domingo is loaded first and in the rear. If you are concerned, sit on the right side of the bus and you can look out the window at every stop for walking luggage.

in october i paid, if i recall correctly, 270 pesos from SD to sosua, los charamicos. and the total trip was about 4.5 hours including the public taxi to rocky's.
