Casa Del Mar was my first experience in the DR and we went in March of 2000. The place was clean and huge with an excellent beach and pool area. If you like to snorkel, I'd recommend bringing your own gear because of time/rental limits the resort puts on their gear..usually only an hour a day. We were in the water constantly because there was so much to see.

We did take the full day tour into Santo Domingo and enjoyed it, so if you don't mind a long bus ride, it's worth the time IMO.

I still have pictures up of Casa Del Mar, snorkeling and Santo Domingo on my website if you're interested in looking before you go.

Hi Steve,
Get out into the town & visit the locals. They are very friendly (keep your jewelery to a minimum though & your wallet close to you most sensitive areas, just in case!!) & check the tour/excursion prices away from the hotel - generally 15 -20% cheaper than the British Tour companies for the same excursion!!

The Jeep Safari is normally good value & depending on your age/interests/family group, the FunnyBikes (4 wheel motorbikes) can provide a fun day too. Near the airport there is a waterpark & nearer to Puerto Plata there is an Amusement park with Go-carts etc.

If you need more, drop me a line direct - I am a Brit who has been living here on the North Coast for 10 years. Where you from? - Grahame Bush.

I think Bushbaby has confused estrella del mar hotel (in caberete) with casa del mar in Bayahibe (near La Romana).
There is nothing really to see outside of the resort. It is situated near a fishing village called Bayahibe (no action at all). Your best bet would be to rent a boat from a guy named Lenny and go see the Isla Soana and do tell him to let you stop over at Picina Natural. Its a huge swiming pool type area in the midst of the ocean where the water is only waist deep and the sand is sugar white. Most people park their boats there and spend the whole afternoon swiming in water as the boat person makes drinks for you from his ice cooler. Go up to see the new marina for the rich and famous.
Enjoy your stay.
