Cell Phone Rentals

Would it be any easier to just rent a cell phone when travelling within the DR? Does anyone have any info as to where in Puerto Plata I could do this quickly. It seems like a lot of work and a lot of expense to have to program your own phone and probably I would have to take it to Santiago. Do they rent them at the airport ? Cost of doing this? Thamks

Sorry about the duplication

Talk about a slow response on that one. I thought they forgot about my first post.

They rent cellular phones at the airport and major Codetel and Tricom call centers along with wall and auto chargers for RD$20/day. Incoming and outgoing calls cost RD$16/min, plus tolls for long distance (long distance within the DR is not extra), with airtime charges reduced by 50% while calling long distance. This info was accurate as of few months ago.

Re: Cell Phone Rentals - UPDATE

I have a cell phone rented at Codetel in Santo Domingo. They have the program Rent-a-phone. The prices are as Jim says, although they don't charge you for incoming calls. Not even for incoming calls from the US. I already confirmed this because I paid my first month of cell phone and received a full summary of all my calls and charges and there is no charge for incoming calls.

Then, the cost is: RD$20 a day, plus RD$16 per minute (your calls only). Call Codetel at 220-1111 and ask for the program Rent-a-phone.
