My friend and i will be in Punta Cana for 2 months and will be visiting the Capital. We would like to stay at a really nice hotel/villa/condo, for a reasonable rate(not more than 150$ USD night...and that's already really high for us). Preferably "downtown" SD, within walking distance to clubs and restos.

Thanks :)

Punta Cana is the only area that I really know...just wanted a quiet place to relax while on a small sabbtical from work....Planning on visiting several places...why ? Is there somewhere better I could have chosen ? Like POP or Cabarete?

Punta Cana is great for tourists that come down for a few days' vacations, but other than the resorts there's not a whole lot to do around there. It's not a real town per se, but a conglomeration of resorts and it's far from everything else in the country.

If you want to do some things in addition to just relax then I think Puerto Plata/Cabarete area would have been a better choice...and if you really wanted to get away from everything then I think Samana or Barahona would also be better choices. Just my opinion...

i totally agree. in 60 days you could have covered the whole country and used some other place as a base camp.

hopefully you can learn the transportation system to get around while you are here...

good luck

Thanks for the info....

I appreciate all the feedback...we only picked PC cause that's an area we really know...plus to be honest with you, if I spend 59 of the 60 days doing almost nothing...on the beach, I will be more than pleased. But this is in fact going to be the base...we are planning about 4-5 trips inccluding SD, POP, La Romana and Sosua...:glasses:

There should be no discussion on better places to stay for 2 months, as she has already stated 2-3 times that Punta Cana is where she is going to stay, her mind is made up.

So her question is where to stay in Santo Domingo when she goes there for a side trip!

I can't give you much info as I haven't been to SD for many many years, but I have stayed at the Nicolas de Ovando, beautiful and historic hotel. You can get a room for as low as $151.00 US per night.(current rates-2007) It is situated in the colonial zone. I can't say for sure what is close by for discos etc. as my stay did not comprise of an active nightlife, but more of a history lesson.:squareeye

I do not want to provide the link in case I get into trouble:nervous: but it is very easy to google it.

I'm spending 2 days (away from a resort area) in Santo Domingo and have selected the Hotel Atarazana. The rate is in the $80 range per night for the best rooms, so you may be getting half of that offered in the $150 hotel, but I think the Atarazana looks a beaut and I love the history with modern amenities!

They have excellent customer service as well as communication and I'm sure it won't stop once I arrive at their door.

The best hotel for the price is Hotel Drake in the Naco section. Hotel has off-street parking, hot water, cable tv and clean rooms for 1,100 pesos. Hottest restaurants and nightclubs are within walking distance of the hotel.

hostal nader

I also recommed Hostel Nader in zona colonial. I don't know the rates, you should check out http://www.naderenterprises.com/hostal/. This is owned by the Nader family, active in the art/society scene here. I was there a few years ago, and it was quite lovely from what I saw.

If you book the Sofitel online you can get a cheaper rate! Sofitelcom. Stay at the Nicholas Ovando. It's nicer than the other one. I can't remember the other Sofitel's name.

Try The Jarragua

May I suggest the Jarragua Hotel. It is a Marriott propery and it is beautiful. It is located right along the water with a spectacular view and the property is the most safe that you get. The room rates are not the bad. Normally I aways stay there. The rates go for like $85 USD per day.. suggest that you book a Garden View/Style room in the back. More private and comfortable. You will love the pool, spa etc. The casino is the biggest in town and is open 24 hrs. There are a couple of very nice places to eat there and the staff is wonderful. If you book online with the Marriott website and select the weekend special rate of $85 you can get a free breakfast. Good luck. I think you may really enjoy this place.
