Anyone in Santo Domingo who has children under 10 should wait not one more day and head out to visit the new Museo Infantil Trampolin. This is an excellent children's fun-learning museum, with excellent exhibits, top notch technology, with a one-hour touch experience that young children will love. The staff is excellent, too.
Ironically, the museum, a pet project of First Lady Rosa Gomez de Mejia (who has several grandchildren under 10), highlights the ecology and the national parks, several of which tomorrow, with the support of her husband, President Hipolito Mejia, will be mutilated in Congress tomorrow in order to give way to the construction of hotels and mining projects. Many of the photos shown of the National Park of the East and Bahia de las Aguilas (Parque Jaragua) may become just that, photos of what used to be, if the Mejia government is allowed to get away with the bill that is presently in Congress.
But for many of us, it is a sad experience. What was at Casa de Bastidas there before was one of the best cultural spaces for art exhibits, and the lovely trees are no longer there... The government spent upwards of RD$100 million to carry out the project, while fully abandoning the Plaza de la Cultura museums, to the embarassment of all of us who love Santo Domingo. But regardless, I highly recommend the museum for all who have young children. Go while it is brand new.
