My family and I have traded a timeshare week into The Coconut Palms Resort in Sosua July 24 - 31 this year. What can anyone tell me about the resort, amenities, and level of service they provide. Any experiences, good or bad would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi Pat, Hope you will enjoy your week at Coconut Palms, my husband and I were there for a week, recently thru RCI.

About not having AC, I was worried that it would be a problem but it wasn't.

If you are taking more than 2 people, the fold out sofa would be real tough to sleep on. The pool was good. The activities were, well some were ok. They have a nice show one night.

The ad says that it is conveniently located and close to things. WRONG! This place is in the middle of nowhere. I recommend renting a car!!! Or paying for taxi's which would not be my choice.

The nearby beach is desserted. Always was too rough to even put your feet in.

The food was typical for the Dominican, which is not like the states. Plan ahead for food as it is made to order. The hotel people were friendly. The laundry service was good. The apartment building next door has a little grocery store for munchies and soda. We even bought some stuff and ate breakfast in occasionally. The beach at Sosua was scary, I saw people swimming in it but I wouldn't and the vendors are pests, can't shop in peace even if you wanted to. The beach at Caberate looked nicer but walking the streets to shop was a hassle. Everyone pitching something to the point of needing to get rude for them to go away.

Do not bring any valuables here!!! What you bring, guard! Get the hotel safe key. Don't carry anything you don't need with you. Lock your luggage. I speak from experience $900 nworth of jewelry! Go places were there are other people, and don't be daydreaming!

About renting a car, we had no troubles, driving here is a riot, fun riot. The horn honking and light flashing is a curitesy to others on the road and don't mean you are going the wrong way.

The weather here is perfect. Shorts and T shirts everyday. And something nicer for dinner. Bring bugs stuff and sun tanned and prepare to have fun.

I live here now for a whole 6 weeks and my husband for 6 months. We love it here. We are in Barahona and every chance we get we explore another part of this paradise. Good Luck, Linda

Thanks LINDA!!! I appreciate the response. Though, I am a little apprehensive now about our RCI exchange. I have been through the loss of valuables as well as the aggressive vendors (Acapulco) so we will be prepared for that. We have a 2 bedroom unit for me, the wife, and 3 kids (B16,G15,B12). I had been told that the beaches on the North Coast were relatively calm as compared to the South Coast. What was wrong with the beach at the resort? Also, did you try the "free daily scuba lessons" advertised for the resort? We were told by RCI that you could get an optional meal plan at the resort that included breakfast and dinner for the week ($130.00 US per person). Would you recommend this? We can always bring some frozen food to cook. Finally, did the resort have things like dish soap, paper towels, and the like in the unit.

Thanks again for your help.

While it is true that this hotel is in the "middle of nowhere", it is also true that it is in the middle of everything. Depends on if you are an optimistic or a pessimist, I suppose. I wouldn't book the food portion because there are plenty of places to go to eat in the area. Your offspring will love Columbus Aquapark, you are near Sosua Beach town and Cabarete. You are also about half an hour west from Playa Grande and the many small beaches in the area such as Caleton, Diamante. What you will need is to rent a car and just explore the north coast. With a car and a good map you can go as far as exploring the original site where Columbus made his first landing at La Isabela, then tour Puerto Plata City (see the amber museum and probably the sky lift will be open, Playa Dorada resorts area. Another day visit Columbus Aquapark near Sosua. And then spend another day visiting Sosua Beach. Then another day for Cabarete, and another day for Rio San Juan-Cabrera-Playa Grande, with time for going dancing in Pueblito Principe. Your hotel will serve as an oasis for when you need a break from activity.

Thanks Dolores.....just trying to get some balance as everyone likes everything. Your and Linda's responses have been helpful. I'm sure we will enjoy the visit. We've been to the Bahama's, Antiqua, Trinidad, and Cozumel so I think I know what to expect. I appreciate your suggestions as to some places to go.

Best regards,
