We are in Sosua and are looking to take the Metro bus to Santo Domingo this coming monday. We want to stay in the Colonial zone in walking distance to most of the sites. Can anyone give us some ideas of a nice place to stay. Thanks in advance for the help. BtC

hotel in SD

You can't beat the Hotel Venezia (Residencia Venezia). It's adjacent to the Colonial Zone--a five minute walk to the Conde. Rooms are clean. Good hot water. TV, refrigerator, safe in room. Private secured parking. Good A/C.
Friendly competent staff. $50 - $60 US per night. A real bargain. 809-682-5108. Tell them Joe (from Chicago) sent you.

We recently stayed at the Hotel Palacio and thought it was great. Good location with everything just a couple of blocks outside your door.

Hotel Colonial Zone

Hi:

Just stayed there 2 Saturdays ago. Without a doubt the El Conde Hotel is best choice and location with the best local ambiance. It is an old colonial hotel. The room are big and you can get one with a balcony overlooking Columbus Square. They have a large outdoor cafe in the shade of a 120 year old tree and across the plaza is the oldest church in the new world. It is in the middle of all the historical sites. Check out Condepenalba.com Condepenalba.com Condepenalba.com Condepenalba.com Condepenalba.com. The room are air conditioned and reasonalby priced, $75.00 a night.

I stayed at the Mercure last week and enjoyed it - in fact I am back there again this week again staying at the Mercure. For the price you get breakfast included - you can sit right on El Conde and watch the pedestrian traffic.

STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM THE MERCURE ON THE CONDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The room's are small, hard mattress, small pillow's,room's have musty mildew smell, small bathroom's, was there in May had problems in three diffrent room's.Only good part was front desk even had a waitress say something nasty to me and wife.
I'm not a prima donna but when I'm spending my hard earned money it's a diffrent story, any of the above recomendation's are good choice.

Wow I have had a very different experience. Yes the rooms are smallish. BUT I have found them very resonsive and easy to work with. I've stayed there on almost every trip to the capital! In fact I am there at the moment.

I live in Zona Colonial and have stayed at many hotels here. The 2 best and most expensive are the Nicolas de Ovando and Hotel Frances owned by the Accor Group .next is Hotel Palacio which has good size rooms , good airconditioning and good hot water. All the above 3 have car parks . Then follow the hotels on Conde , such as Mecure and the hotel on the corner of Conde and Merino and the Hotel Aida which are cheaper and have their limitations .There is also the Hotel Europa several streets away from Conde but I have not stayed there .
Finally there are a couple of good boutique hotels the best being Coco overlooking the pier from where the boat goes to Puerto Rico

So what's it like living in Zona Colonial? Why did you chose to live there? And what does it cost to live there, assuming good security, 24 hour electricity and air conditioning, 2 bedrooms....a fairly nice place? It looks intriguing when we pass through when in SD, but don't have a clue about the reality of it. Thanks!

I stayed at the boutigue Hotel partner of the Gran Almirante in Santiago a few years ago. It was nice but I cannot remember the name. It was right in Zona Colonial in a good location.

I just finished staying at the Hotel Europa. Very nice experience for a hotel in the $60-$70 range. Just a block from Plaza de Espa?a. A few blocks from El Conde and Parque de Colon. (sometimes it's better to be a few blocks removed from the tourist Mecca rather than right in the middle of it all). Head north and La Sirena, Barrio Chino, and Parque Enriquillo is a few blocks away. The cheaper rooms are interior and have no windows. The exterior rooms have large glass doors opening up to balconies and they start at about $70 with tax for two people. Free buffet breakfast on their beautiful rooftop terrace. Free wifi in the common area downstairs and the rooftop terrace.

I have stayed at the Europa, it is a decent hotel. Nothing special but the staff was very friendly and accommodating, I never needed anything for very long. Brought all my bags up to my room and down when I checked out, brought breakfast to the room free as well. No frills at $280 per week booked online.

The best so far has to be El Palacio, very nice place and my room was fantastic. Service great, and no problems. Also, very quiet.

Next time I will stay at the Hotel en El Conde, great place and you can't beat the location either. The cafe is awesome too......

Location is right off El Conde. After some challenges dealing with problems in my room the first night, they gave me a different room and everything was fine. The rooms look like the pictures on the web site. Interior rooms are quiet with no view. Exterior rooms you are going to deal with street noise. Be prepared to take the stairs. I was traveling with two other friends and they had similar experiences. My room was $55.00/night. But, the rooms can be a low as $45.00/night for a repeat stay.

I am by no means an expert on the DR..but I have been to the capital a few times and I am returning early next year and I have been looking via this forum (I've posted several questions on threads) and trip advisor and other sites for recommendations.

I found Hotel Palacio to be the best the Zona Colonial has to offer and thats were I plan to stay for my romantic outing.. Hostal Nicolas is overpriced (at least for my dates) simply because it has a pool. Hotel Frances was a colonial house converted to a hotel and the rooms sizes differ vastly and the tvs are old. I've stayed at Atarazana and loved it but it is not in as great of a location as Palacio and from what I see it Palacio has rooms with Jacuzzis and terraces (certain rooms) and has a rooftop pool and their rooms and bathrooms are large compared to others of similiar price in the area. Just my two cents Im a bit picky and like to make sure i get the bang for my buck. Just read the reviews on trip advisor they give you a feel for the property before you visit.

I've read from the manager of the hotel (on trip advisor) thatroom 112 is a great room (senior suite, assuming it has a terrace)
others are 128,131,135,136 (all info gathered from trip advisor reviews)
