Congress approves new housing ministry

The Chamber of Deputies passed the bill that creates the Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Constructions (Mivhed). The new government entity merges the Presidential Supervisory Office of Public Works (Oisoe) and the National Housing Institute (Invi). The bill had already passed in the Senate. After its approval in the Chamber of Deputies on 21 July 2021, the bill now returns to the Presidency for enactment into law. The Mivhed will be responsible for carrying out government housing projects nationwide.

Al Pais deputy Jose Horacio Rodriguez complained the new ministry increases state bureaucracy and is a burden on the national budget. The spokesman for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Gustavo Sánchez said the new ministry duplicates many of the roles already assigned to the Ministry of Public Works.
