Just out of curiousity, to any Dominicans, how many continents were you taught there are?
I know in Canada how many I'm taught, but every Dominican I have a disagreement with how many there really are.
Let me know!

America is in fact one continent, it does not matter how one tries to slice it for political or cultural convenience.

So we have only three continents in the world - wow, we are getting closer!

1st: Africa, Eurasia
2nd: America (north to south)
3rd: Australia

Re: Continents (Henry)

Sorry, Henry:

It would be four - Antarctica is missing on your list. The number of continents is not just related to connectivity of landmasses. The whole idea of continental drift needs to be factored in. North and South America have only been connected for a short period of time - geologically speaking. Africa and South America were once connected as one and the Indian subcontinent was free floating until it crashed into the bottom of Asia and created the Himalayas. Go back far enough and there was only one supercontinent. By the way, if you look up continent in the Webster's dictionary you will see that they list both six or seven as being correct.

Just fill in the blank space:

"In 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered _ _ _ _ _ _ _"

I have another little detail for you, please fill in the blank spaces:

"United States of _ _ _ _ _ _ _"

Obviously our founding fathers knew better.

I do know that the admission to such fact has deep connotations, but that would be a different matter of discussion.

Re: BINGO!

Ross,

The bingo winning number combination was 2-6-3-7-4-22, is that the one you had?

Finally! Someone shares my theory!! Glad to see that someone besides myself knows there is such a thing as a "World Atlas" - but it wasn't always the way it's currently depicted! Look at a flat mp of the world and view it as a "puzzle". Amazing.

Guess when I went to school, we didnt count this island as a continent! Wonder how many locals do know of the existence of the same????

We might start with your Godwana again (I think that was the name!)

Would bring us together anyway! hehe

Yes I am sure our founding fathers were masters of the science of tectonics and were just THAT close to calling it the United States of Pangea.

Re: correct me if i am wrong.

Columbus thought he had reached India. he knew nothing about America (at first). He died without knowing that there was a pacific ocean so near by. He knew nothing about the Pacific Ocean.

Where did you go to school? In the DR they teahc that America is ONE continent, not north america and south america, etc. The name america comes, as I'm sure you all know, from the guy that drew the first map of the continent (Americo Vespucci), and he did not say that he was drawing the map of three continents but one. There are six continents (Oceania, Asia, Europe, America, Africa, and antartica). We're all americans whether people from the US want to admit it or not. The real reason is that people from the US have always considered their country the center of the universe (Some people would say it is New York), and whatever is outside those borders they could care less about.

Re: correct me if i am wrong.

since you ask to be corrected.
Columbus was looking for the dutch indies, what we call today indonesia. Not India.
