Coral Costa Caribe

I have made reservations for late January/early Feb for myself and my wife, my parents for their 50th Anniversary and my sister and her fiance. I have read the review and looked through the last 6 months of archives, but would like a little more perspective on how the resort area relates to other areas of the DR (been to Punta Cana and Puerto Plata). Specifically, is there worthwhile snorkeling from shore. How crowded does the beach get - problems getting a chaise lounge? How is the food, and service. How close is golf and how much does it cost (with and without rental clubs). Is there a good booze catarmaran with snorkeling? How is the horseback riding tour - does it include beach horseback riding and how much? What are the strengths of the resort - weaknesses.

Thanks,

Marv

Hi I stayed at Coral Costa Caribe in Juan Dolio DR just a few weeks ago. I really enjoyed the hotel. I cannot wait to go back, not just for the hotel but my finance lives there too. Never had a problem finding a lounge chair, 24hr bar service no kidding, disco not bad, sports bar nice to hang out in had pool table, beach has lounge chairs, huts to sit under, clean water, good food in buffet restaurant as well as Italian and Mexican, really liked the Mexican one, snack bar is good has great pizza hamburgers fries chicken especially if you get hungry late at night, great service always someone filling your water glass etc... beautiful grounds, casino was fun, all day long activities by the pool and on the beach, good nightly entertainment and friendly people. I can't say how it compares to other resorts in DR as I have never been to any but compared to PV Mexico I stayed at Club Marival I would have to say I liked DR better. Well I hope I have given you some idea on the hotel have a great trip!

Great info Mysti! Your response makes me think we will enjoy it just as much as I thought from what I've read already. If anyone else can comment on the snorkeling from shore, golf issue, horseback riding and catamaran cruise, I would be very appreciative.

By the way, were hair dryers included?

I hate to rain on your parade, but I just returned, on Nov. 13th, from a week's stay at Coral Costa Caribe. Personally, I would not return there. My husband & I had a lot of problems with service. The lock box in our room had the lock left in by the last guest & it took them 3 days to remove it so we could use the box. Also they charge $16US for the lock per week - not just a deposit, but a fee! The alarm on the clock/radio in our room was broken & they refused to replace it,saying we didn't need it because they have wake-up calls. The day we were to leave, we did not recieve our wake-up call, overslept and were late leaving for the airport. Chaise lounges were plentiful, but we had to wait 4 hours the first day on the beach to get towels. After that we just kept our beach towels a few days before attempting to exchange for clean ones. There is no good snorkeling from their beach. We paid $15US per person to go out snorkeling with the water sports people several miles away and it was lousy. Ocean very rough & very few fish. We did have some good snorkeling during the Catilina Island Cruise. Also through the water sports people, it was $65US per person, an all day trip with lunch provided. There they had a good reef, clear water & lots of fish. The maid service is lacking. We consistantly were left without washcloths and/or handtowels. They have inadequate seating capacity in the buffet restaurant. Good luck with your large group - get there early! We often were unable to get a table for two & had to share a table with other guests. For the Mexican & Italian restaurants you must make a reservation, and are only allowed to eat in each of them one time.(They give you vouchers when you check-in). The only other restaurant on premises is cash only - not included in their "all-inclusive"! We thought the "snacks" - pizza, burgers , etc. were terrible. It rained the night of 11/11 and the only elevator in the main building was put out of order because the water was just pouring down the elevator shaft. It was still not fixed when we checked out on 11/13. We were on the 4th of 6 floors, and had to use the stairs the last two days. The last day, after not getting our wake-up call, when we called for a bellman to come for our bags so we could check-out, it took three calls, 20 min. apart, and we ended up carrying our own bags down 4 flights because the bellman never did get there and we had get going. They said it was because they only had 2 bellmen & they were busy! Also, after the rain, the outside hallways leading to the rooms had about 2" of water we had to walk through each time because it just did not go down the drains as it should have. We went horseback riding at Crazy Horse. We did the 3hr ride through the countryside for $35US per person. It would have been OK if it hadn't rained. We were supposed to go from 3-6, but started an hour late, got totally soaked during the ride & didn't finish until after it was totally dark. Got really sore backsides from the wet jeans in the saddle for three hours too. Unless you ride a lot I would suggest the one hour beach ride. Over all, the entertainment people,"The Chocolate Friends", were very nice and friendly, as were the bartenders, but the people at the front desk are clueless. Regarding drinks, you can't get all drinks at all bars. Some don't have wine, some don't have pina coladas, it is kind of hit & miss. Also, if you get a pina colada, it will be alcohol-free unless you specify you want rum in it. Never ran across that before!! Always thought you had to specify "virgin" if you didn't want the rum!! Well, enough said. Good Luck and I sure hope you don't have as many problems with the place as we did! Maybe we were spoiled. We've stayed at Couples in Jamiaca and Sandals in St. Lucia and they were both excellent!!!!! I would highly recommend them!!!

Spoiled would be a mild word. It sounds as though most of your problems were either weather related or poor choices on your part

I'm sorry to hear that. I visited this resort just a week and a half ago in the evening. I saw the rooms, the disco, pool, beach, and dining areas, snack bar, etc. I thought it was beautiful and a step above the Coral Hamaca in Boca Chica.

The problems you experienced, for the most part, have been similar to my experiences at virtually every large all-inclusive in the DR, some worse than others, with a few exceptions such as Casa de Campo and the Melia Bavaro. It is this kind of lack of attention to detail, lack of maintenance, and lack of follow-up procedures that really upsets many American travelers to the DR, who are used to better service even at budget hotels.

The food procedures have been a major complaint of mine as well and most of the all-inclusives seem to follow the same model. With the exception of Casa de Campo, EVERY other all-inclusive I've encountered in the DR as some type of system that inconveniences the guest, such has limiting when and where you can eat, requiring reservations be made during a specific 2 hour period in the morning, not enough space to accommodate all guests' dining desires, etc.

Most hotels in the DR charge for use of the room safe as well, the exception being those that have electronic combinations (such as Casa de Campo). I don't understand why they do it as an added cost since it is usually some fee like US$2/day, that probably costs them more to administer the associated paperwork than they profit from the deal and it alienates the guest.

I notice you didn't mention how tiny those elevators are as well. To me, it didn't seem they could accommodate more than 1 person with their luggage at a time. It least they HAVE elevators. I've stayed on the 4th floor of a DR hotel that didn't even have elevators. That gets old real quick.

Concerning your "reef" experience, well, that's Juan Dolio. Remember too that the abundance of fish, calmness of the water, and water clarity varies with your exact snorkel spot, weather, time of year, luck, etc. Beyond that, I can't comment on what is or isn't available directly via the beach.

I hope you at least got a good price for your stay. Then you can say you got what you paid for! I hope you will share your comments with them by clicking on the link below.

How, pray tell, is the hotel's lack of efficiency in correcting the problem with our lock box, giving us another alarm clock, giving us a requested wake-up call, supplying standard towels, having inadequate dining areas and too few bellmen, etc, either weather related or poor choices on our part? Unless you refer to our poor choice in choosing this hotel to start with. We chose it because I had read reviews from others who praised it. I guess my mistake was in not realizing that some people have lower standards than my own.

With the exception of some good snorkeling, none of what you mentioned would be a priority for us in a vacation. Sounds to me like you were on a business trip.

Excuse me?? When you are on vacation you have no need to secure your valuables, have washclothes to use to bathe, have beach towels, have good food, have available seating in the restaurant, have the use of an elevator, have a bellman to carry your bags, or have a wake-up to get to the airport on time for your departure?? You must be accustomed to some pretty primitve vacationing. I would expect such lack of ammenities on a camping trip, but not at a resort hotel. We definately were on vacation. I would not have time for snorkeling, horseback riding and cruises on business trips.

What did a weeks all inclusive stay cost at this property?

If you documented your problems, lack of advertised services etc, and charged it to a major credit card, you could always dispute the charge for not receiving what was advertised. If you used AMEX, it will be no problem as they will act as your advocate.

Thanks

Tom

I agree with you, you are entitled to the services that you listed regardless of how much you paid to go to the resort. In Dominican all-inclusives the rate will vary from guest to guest and season to season, but the services are the same for all. How early or late they booked and through which tour operator can account for enormous diffences. Still, the Coral Costa Caribe bills itself as a five star resort and service should be far better than you received.

You can post your comments under resort reviews here on DR1 and at http://www.debbiesdominicantravel.com/

Karen,

Sorry if I hurt your feelings, I do appreciate hearing the negative things too. But, if I may be so bold, I suggest your trip was primarily ruined by the weather and conditions resulting from that, and that your attitude about the other problems you had may have been influenced by the weather if only subconciously. After all, November is noted to be one of the rainiest and stormiest months in the Carib, which I imagine was reflected in the price you paid.

Last year in January I had very windy conditions every day for 10 days at Punta Cana. it was so windy we couldn't use the beach at least 6 of those days. Now, I understand that happens occasionally at that time of year there. During that time, a toilet backed up into our room! It did take all day to get it fixed and we were certainly inconvenienced, but given the language situation, in retrospect, I'm satisfied they did the best they could. I've been staying at all-inlcusives all over the carribean for several years now, and aside from those problems, the resort we stayed at had the best service and food we have had. Whether I have lower standards, I'm not sure, I prefer to think of it as being on vacation from getting myself upset over everything too. Maybe you should stick with the higher priced Sandals, etc.
