The announcement that the two doses of Covid-19 vaccination would be required for using public transport and for access to many places has delivered the desired result. Thousands are again lining up to be vaccinated. The daily number of vaccines administered jumped from a low 20,797 on 30 September 2021 to 52,828 doses for the 17 October 2021 deadline. In the Dominican Republic already around 60% of the population is fully vaccinated, but the government has vaccine stocks for 100%+ and wants more people to get the jab.
The vaccines have spared the population a major spike in Covid-19 cases even with the entry of more aggressive variants. The Presidency has removed curfew restrictions nationwide and the new measures seek to motivate those that have not been vaccinated to get with it.
