Corporal punishment/ caning coming to the DR?

I was in a restaurant in SDQ today where lots of powerful Dominican
"politicos" have lunch and discuss all kinds of things. As I was listening, the topic being discussed centered on sending a "trial balloon" up through legislation on the implementation of a corporal punishment "bill" for delinquency etc. here in the Dom Rep in close parameter to what is being used in Malaysia (specifically the use of caning).

The argument being discussed was that the procedures used in caning really delivers an impact in slowing down "nuisance" crime there (i.e. robbery, vandalism, and assault) and that the DR needs to start implementing more "drastic measures" to deter certain crime.

We have Great Britain to thank for implementing this form of punishment into its colonies "back in the day" and I really hope something like this does get implemented here in the DR (though I doubt it will get very far here in all actuality).

I can certainly relate to this issue. A lot of people might support it!!

Damn Sir - are you going to be advocating 20 lashes for every bad shot on the golf course in future?? I had better get a large delivery of tar delivered to the house!!

Seriously though, in the UK violence, disrespect & unruly behaviour in the classroom has greatly increased since corporal punishment was removed & this nasty behaviour (& lack of consideration for others) has been extended into the more 'adult?' life. There are many in the UK who would welcome it's return & I am sure that introduction of corporal punishment here would quell a few 'hot headed' moments that then lead on to things that can (& do) get out of control!!

Hey, maybe Robert could start the process here?
30 lashes for calling the DR the Dominican (50 if a small 'd' is used!!)
20 lashes for calling another poster names unbecoming to DR1 language
10 lashes for posting links for advertising purposes without Robert's permission

Does anyone have other 'Naughties' they would like to see punishment by lashes for?? I joke about DR1 of course, but what level of misdemeanor do posters feel lashes MIGHT be acceptable? Should these be done in private or by public viewing? (Ahhh the days of the guillotine - HB will remember them well!:cheeky: ;) !) ~ Grahame.

Would it help? When a thief is catched, doesn't the police punch and hit him while going to the police station before knowing that he knows somebody big? After paying or cleared he is back to the street and going back to stealing.

Your point is valid, but should be made into another thread.
Corporal punishment would be the issue here, and I see it as a necessary evil.
The pickpockets who work the streets, have little fear of the justice system that spits them back out the next day.
They might consider other careers, if they knew that they were going to be caned 20 times on the soles of their feet, and not be able to walk for a few days.
That's a real deterrent.

What about conning, deceiving others and stealing from people this way? Where it is not as clear cut as getting into somebody else?s pocket but still is a theft. Did they talk about it?

I am all for it, as corporal punishment might be the only language those low-life would understand.

Since they were discussing the introducing of caning as it is practised in "Malaysia", your question could likely be answered by doing a search on Google or some search engine to see the "who, what, when, why and how" of caning in Malaysia is performed. Obviously, these politicos had done that. I do know that it is a humiliating process (caned on the butt etc in public), turns "hard men" into cry babies, hurts like heck, AND deters crime.

The difference may be that the countries that use this type ofpunishment have it "down to a science" and it just probably could not be implemented here.

The rest of the world would call us savages and protest it's use.
They would apply political and financial pressure on us.

I don't think the DR would be able to get away with something like this although I believe the results might be helpful in dettering crime. For whatever reason the DR seems to get hammered about it's treatment of the Haitian popuation while in Malaysia they can do this and a whole lot more, such as forced religious conversions, put people to death for minor infractions safe have for terroristists organizations, etc, etc.

Can anybody say "politcally correct" press, please?

Cane the parents first since they have no clue on how to raise their children. Many are raised by the baby sitters who can't read or write themselves let alone know how to raise a child.

Ain't that the truth!

I received the cane at school once. The actually canning wasn't nothing special, no tears, walk in the park.

But...

Ringing my parents asking permission to cane me was very effective.
Now I had to go home and face mum and dad, no fun!
That ended my powder paint bomb days :)

When I was growing up your friends parents would correct you if you got out of line. By the time you got home they had already called your parents. So you got it twice. How dare you embaress us in front of the neigorbors. At shcool I went to a private one if you came home with a note on your shirt it ment you already got your butt wipped at school. Would get another one at home and then one the next morning just to remind me not to screw up again.

Those same politicos would certainly not be talking about their own offspring, the same "hevitos" who used to blast their car stereos near Diego Colons' house or on the Monument in Santiago.

Or those hevitos who drag race their cars and kill people on the streets of Santo Domingo late at night.

If anyone should get caned, it should be those very same heavyweight politicos who steal from the government coffers and laugh all the way to the bank(have you seen how much money the metro is eating up? Gee, I wonder where all those pesos are going...hmmm...).

I can just hear this conversation from these politicos-"Hey, lets' use the money we steal to improve health care and education for the poor!!!"

"Why bother? Lets' keep screwing them and when they get out of line we can just cane them!!!"

"Hey, if it kept Robert the moderator from turning into a juvenile delinquent, it should help these pathetic poor souls who have no hope here for a better life and no future!!!"

No, better yet, lets' cane the drug dealers who send tons money to the DR without having to explain where they got it and are greeted by these same politicos as rock stars as soon as they get off the plane!!!

Better yet still, lets' cane all the whoremongers in Sosua and Boca Chica-and while we're at it, lets' cane those no-good putas!!!:cheeky::cheeky::cheeky:

But no, I got the solution!!! Lets' cane the savage delinquentes so they can go back to their corrugated tin huts with the mud floors and leave the real robbing and stealing to those wielding the cane!!!

Instead of caning, which seems to be a unanimous choice for the good folks here on DR1, why don't you try to fix your corrupt government so that innocent people aren't thrown in jail and left to rot?

Who do we have to cane to get poor Mel from Sosua out of jail?

Berzin, it would appear that you don't think much of "caning". Not to worry though....I am SURE that the system will just stand the way it is. Deliquency makes the "world-go- round" down here.

What's the difference between introducing caning and the routine roughing up that many suspects get when taken to cells, if they haven't already been shot on the scene?

The thought of corrupt politicians and businessmen as well as common criminals getting a good sound beating certainly does have its merits...

Well, look at it this way. You live in a country that chokes hope off for only the very wealthy and politically connected. You make it impossible for poor people to get the hell off the island and you wonder why theres' so much delinquencia.

I'm all for caning, believe me. But caning a few miserable souls who live with no hope isn't going to do it.

I think you have me confused with someone else that is actually involved in the political process here.

I overheard a discussion. I thought it was interesting. I am not a citizen of the Dominican Republic. I employ a lot of citizens of the Dominican Republic and pay them significantly more than the minimum and provide health insurance as well. Therefore, I am very sure I am not keeping anyone trapped here on this island.
