Cotorras and the law....

Hi,

I am Canadian living in the DR. About 3 years ago a co-worker bound for a vacation in Germany left her Cotorra (small green parrot) with me to care for. She never returned and I basically raised it (it was just a baby when she left it with me). Needless to say, I have fallen amdly in love with the bird (and vice versa). I will be moving back to Canada in about 6 months and cannot imagine leaving her here. I know they are illegal to have as they are facing extinction...(although I have been told by a few people they are no longer).

My question is, what exactly are the laws regarding Cotorras in the DR and what can I do, if anything, to take her back with me to Canada? I am willing to go to any lengths to do so. Who can I contact?

Any info. greatly appreciated. Thank you.

In the Dominican Republic you would contact the Ministry of Agriculture to bring in a bird. You could probably contact them to see if it is illegal to take the bird out. But most important you have to contact the customs house people of the government of Canada to see what regulations apply to importing a bird.
