I have lived in Maryland and Washington Dc. and I like crabs. I see guys walking with the large bundle's of crabs some crabs quite large. Has anyone in this forum tried to cook and consume these Dominican crabs? I like to steam mine in beer. Is the crabs here in the Dominican Republic good tasting I think most are from the rivers, however, I have seen some guys near the highway near the sea walking toward the airport in Santo Domingo.

There is a common coastal sea crab that I have seen people buy. It's body is about baseball sized and shape and the legs are about 8" long each. I don't think there is much meat in the legs.

I've seen them using cinderblocks as hiding holes up in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

I've had sea crabs and even land crabs in SD, they're tasty. The land crabs should be fed corn, bread, etc for a couple of days to clean them out before cooking.

Reminds me of a time when we were first married [70s] and we stopped at my husband's cousins' home in SD to say hi. They were having dinner and insisted we join them - they had mounds of crabs. I dug right in with them, and they were all amazed that I knew how to eat a crab - guess they thought they only live in DR. I grew up near Rockaway Beach in Queens and my dad would buy bushels of them on Cross Bay Blvd - I probably could have taught those Dominicans a thing or two, haha.

We live on Absecon Island now, a barrier island off NJ that has Atlantic City on the other end - and my [Dominican] husband is always fishing off the jetties, the bridges and the piers. I told him he'd better start catching some fish or I'm going to wonder where he's realllllly going :paranoid:

Seriously tho, the Stripers he catches melt in your mouth.

I'm more of a crabber - drop the crab traps with some bait in the center section, sit and relax in a chair and wait for them to trap themselves inside. :cheeky: When we had a boat I used to leave 2 or 3 traps tied to the dock all season, and every afternoon I'd go with a bucket to empty the traps and put fresh bait in. Yum.
