There are cruise ships which stop for the day in Santo Domingo, La Romana and Samana; but I am not aware of any which use the DR as a boarding point. I do, however, reserve the right to be wrong.

I just visited roya caribbean's website and found out that in December they will start operations base out of Santo Domingo. The ship's name is Legend of the Seas and it will depart from santo domingo and return to santo domingo after it goes trought the south caribbean. So far this is the best choice that i have found so i am going to get more information from RC and confirm that all you need is a Dominican passport if you are dont have a U.S. Visa.
thanks for everyone who is replying and keep the repplies coming.

same boat, literally

Hi,
We are taking our honeymoon cruise out of DR on December 16th. We are going to fly in on the 14th and would like a hotel that is fairly close to the cruise port as well as one that I could get to from the airport (SDQ). If anyone could help me I would be most appreciative. I'm nervous about unfamiliar territory :)

I have just booked on the Legend of the seas departing Santo Domingo in March next year.. I have british passport but my husband and sons are all dominican. They do not need a visa for this ship just a dominican passport. There are two routes - one as far south as St lucia, and the other further south to Aruba.

So what happens when the ship goes into port, can one disembark with a Dominican passport only ? I am really curious about this also. Is a travel/tourist visa necessary ?
Thanks for sharing this info..

Yes you can disembark as a dominican. Aparantly when you board the ship they take away your passport and give it back when you get back and they provide you with something when you visit each port. No idea of the specifics. No visa at alll needed just a full passport. We've now paid deposit and the kids are really exited - even have their cabin number!!! Any more info just pm me.

Yes, on the cruises I have been on, they take your passport when you board and you get them back at the end of the cruise. Someone from each country you visit comes on board before the passengers disembark and approves visas for all.

No fuss, no muss, just fun !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The German cruise line Aida run cruises on 2 different routes starting from La Romana - and they do the same thing with the passports for trips ashore on the different islands.
