Do read Natasha's post. It is written

with feeling for the whole holiday season.

I would also point out that the 3 king's day is much bigger in the South of the island than in the North. Up here we have the presents on the 24 evening when Santa comes around.

another thing you will see in a lot of towns is community decorated streets scenes. here in Santiago they have competitions run by the municipality, that sponsor like RD$100,000 to the winners. They go all out and it is worth a trip around town in the evenings to see all the decorations. Not in the high priced neighborhoods, but in all the barrios-Pueblo Nuevo, La Joya, Baracoa, El Ejido, Los Jasmines, Nibaje...
it is really something to behold.

RE: Food...roast pig on palm leaves, roast turkey, every Dominican side dish you can think of. And fireworks at both Christmas and even bigger at new Years.

Re: In addition to Natasha and Hillbilly

We also do fireworks with roman candles and other locally made fireworks. A Christmas tradition includes lots of people left with four or three fingers for not using fireworks properly. It is also very traditional in families that have farms or una finquita to go there and prepare a full Puerco Asao for the whole family(Roast a pork).

Besides the Three Kings and Santa, there is an old tradition of "La Vieja Belen" who also leaves gifts for the kids. This is mostly in rural areas and poor neighborhoods.

Another Christmas delicacy is "Leren", which is a form of miniature hard potato that is kind of crunchy wet. It is delicious! Plenty of Christmas candy, nuts, raisins, apples and grapes.

In towns like La Vega they celebrate la Verbena de Navidad where the entire town parades thru the street celebrating. Lines of people hold hands behind the town music band and as the parade nears to a close people start running still holding their hands and you have to keep up with it or you fall to the ground. Many people have lost their favorite shoes doing this. But it is a lot of fun, specially if you are inlove and do it with a girl.

Many women get seranaded around Christmas time by their pursuing lovers. As far as the dinners not being as big as United States I beg to differ. Most households will grow to about 20 or more people for a Christmas dinner. The table in my family never had less than 16 people, plus all the hangers on. It took several roasted porks to satisfy the appetite. As a single guy I just jump around from invitation to invitation. I just bring a gift everywhere I go(Usually Italian Panettone, which is a delicacy in DR and a Christmas must)or Fruit Cake(My own recipe)

After Santa delivers it is traditional for all the kids to visit their other family kids, cousins, friends, etc. in their neighborhoods to show each other the gifts they got and start playing.

A Dominican tradition is the lightning or decoration with Charamicos. These are folksy Dominican decorations actually made in the streets with straw, tree branches and flexible woods depicting cows, deers, some giraffe looking animals, pots, plant holders and wreaths. The nicers ones are painted in white. They can be found by the thousands at Churchill Avenue between Ave. 27 de Febrero and Kennedy Ave. A typical cost would be about $US150 for a big stuffed deer.

In the offices, people exchange "Angelitos", or gifts with each other. Around December 1 someone at your office would go around signing up people for angelitos and your name gets thrown in a hat. If your name is picked by someone, that someone is responsible for giving you at Christmas. Gifts are usually foolish, like giving women a box of condoms, and things like that. But it is fun. And of course like all Dominican traditions, there is always controversy about the gifts.gossip, gossip.

Good catch TW, I had forgotten the Angelitos.

The other day I saw a guy get this huge (4"dia.)condom, labled
MEDIUM SIZE.....
They do get funny....
One year I spent four weeks giving rocks with painted faces, charcoal with white-out faces, and used pencil stubs. THEN I gave her a $800RD present....she cryed...typical girl!!

Re: Lurking, are we Natasha? How are you?

Hi there HB! If you don't "see" me around it is because I am usually travelling, which is not particularly thrilling most of the time :-(

Un abrazo,
Natasha
