I know these threads get repeated a lot but I can't find anything recent for Direct TV users. The signal for analog is good in Punta Cana but I was wandering if anyone has had success with the HD. Puerto Rico offers the full package and I was hoping that we would be able to connect with that. Anyone tried this?

Have not tried, but plan on bringing my equipment down next month. I talked to a relative that is a DirecTV dealer. He said the reception for HD should be good and that the sats will be nearly straight above, making aiming less of a challenge (no trees, buildings, etc. in the way). I'll be following this thread with interest.

Are you currently using Direct TV in the DR? Do you have a digital box and HDMI cables? I can't tell if you have the service or just considering? My understanding is that in order to use Direct TV in the DR you need to have a US address and telephone number associated with your account?

Yes you do need a US address (not sure of the telephone number, but that is probably true as well) for a DirecTV account.

I will let you know how it goes. I need to also figure out if I can buy the dish in the DR or if I need to bring the one from the US down, and if it will fit in my suitcase...

Yes you can probably buy a dish in the DR. I believe I have seen the Claro TV dishes which looks like the same one as Directv. I doubt you could fit it in your luggage. I do know someone using Dish Network in the DR but it took some expertise to get the signal. I would think you can get HD since Directv programming includes this. I had Sky TV in the DR. This is out of Mexico and they were just starting to offer HD in Mexico than possiblly expand it to other countries they serve.

I didn't think DirectTV worked in the DR any more. I have Dishnetwork with a US address (and be careful they dont find out the receiver is outside the US) and you need two 5 foot dishes if you want all the popular channels including ABC, NBC etc and channels like Discovery Channel, HBO, History Channel, etc in HD. It may be different for DirecTV but I was always told that the signal wont work due to satellite location or something.

Direct TV does work in the DR, I have it working in my place right now. It requires only 1 five foot dish so you'll have to buy it here. The guy I bought mine from may have another for sale if you PM me Ill find out for you. You also need a US address at the moment.
My question is if someone has an HD receiver are they picking up the HD signal. I only have the analog receiver so I can't check for the HD signal with my dish.

I was picking up 110 and 119 on 2x 3ft dish, with occasional freezing with heavy rain. Now I just watch everything online (or better to say downloaded or streamed from web on WD TV)

Interesting. I'll call my uncle, who has installed both direct and dish for years and ask about dish size. I'll also ask if I can borrow his aiming equipment ;) from what I can tell, the 2x3 dish should work and I think he has an extra. The receiver will be the same one we use in mn, it will just be traveling now (billing address etc will stay the same).

Direct tv is available in punta cana. I have it on two boxes running for more than two years now. You need at least a six but eight foot dish is better for acquiring the signal. Remember your trying to pull in a signal from a satellite that's designated for the us.HD is not available yet but is coming. And you do need an address in the us and you just pay your account online. In my experience the most important thing is the person you get to align your dish. I went through three of them. Now no more losing the signal from the weather.
