I hired a lawyer here in the states to handle my divorce case to a Dominicana. Well, after paying him thousands, the a-hole's gone MIA. I'm hearing that I could be able to file for divorce in the DR without her being present. Anyone have knowledge of whether or not this is doable?
Meanwhile, said Dominicana living fat, dumb, and happy, with green card in hand.

On second thought, I did a search, and found Drlawyer.com.
Think I'll give them a shout.

As I said, he's gone MIA. Even the FL Bar Association claims they don't know his whereabouts. But then, they're the same ones who told me to file a complaint against him.

Valeu Cara!
I have a close friend who did it, he was in the US and she in DR. But they got married in DR (don't know if it made the difference), his attorney had to serve her with the divorce papers in DR. But no one knew her whereabouts at the time, so the attorney just served a noticed on the local paper with the court date. Of course she never showed up, so the judge granted the divorce.

To her surprise after a month of not knowing where she was, he told her of the divorce. Love DR justice system !!!

My 2 cents....

This scenario will be the reverse for me. She's a green card holder in the states, while I plan on coming to the DR for a mini vaca.

You want to tell us what made you think she was different? If not, I understand..... but the education might help someone else.....

We met while I was working in the Turks and Caicos around seven years ago. Having dated Dominican women before, I was struck by the fact that she didn't beg me for $$, catered to my needs, and appeared to be very easy going, and the like. Oh, how I wish I had been a member of DR1 back then.
As it turns out, this heifer totally deserves an Oscar, an Emmy, and any other acting award you can think of. She was the best.
Her downfall, apart from being none too bright (couldn't figure out how to use a microwave), was that she was a pi$$ poor liar.

Be very careful if you are trying to do a divorce without the other party present and without power of attorney. A good friend was involved in that. She trusted the spouse took care of everything..her divorce was published in a Dominican newspaper all that. Jump forward a couple of years and guess what the courts where she lives back in the states does not recognize the divorce as legal. Add to that the divorce papers have neither her or the spouses signature. According the court back in the US the divorce by publication needed to be published in a newspaper where she lived not in the Dominican. Her lawyer back in the US told her that the laws can very state to state and where she lives the state will not recognize the divorce from the Dominican unless all the required steps are followed and there is documentation. How did she find out she wasn't divorced?? She met a great guy in the US and when they did the paperwork for the marriage license that is when she found she was still married. Took her a year plus to get things straightened out plus a lot of cash. The hardest part was finding her former spouse since she cut off all contact with him and his family. My advice would be get a lawyer who has experience and has good references from others.

This is the key. Each state is different, and few universally recognize Dominican divorces. (Divorces done in the Dominican Republic for ease.) If you are both in the US, do it there.

Too bad about losing with lawyer 1. Unfortunate, but going through the DR isn't going to be a better way in the long run.

As fas as I'm aware, you cannot do a divorce by proxy in the DR. Either both spouses need to be present or the power of attorney valid for the non-attending spouse along with mutual consent from both parties.

You also want to check if applicable, that a DR fast divorce is not recognized in all states as far as I'm aware.

Speak to drlawyer.com, they have done many, many quick divorces.

I know many of the "famous" come to the DR for a "quickie" divorce however they already have everything worked out prior. Settlement agreements, etc... I just know my friend was absolutely floored when they told her she was still married. Not to mention the money it cost her twice. She paid for the original "divorce" in the DR. She did in the end get the divorce in the US but consulted with a very good lawyer here in the DR. One that is used frequently by many members of DR1, :classic:
