You are right, Sejo is a good Dominican artist. I know him very well. But you should let this person interested in art that Sejo is not a typical Dominican artist. Maybe what this guy is looking for is folkloric art with coconut trees, huts, peasants and landscapes.

Sejo is a an abstract surrealist, not your Haitian type artist, the sort you see at El Malecon.

Golo, are those guys on the Malecon actually Dominican???? My wife always insisted that they were Haitians pretending to be Dominicans to sell to tourists who didn't know better.

Malecon art

The boring, repetitious art(if you call it that) that you see in El malecon is mostly Haitian. There are Dominicans who now reproduce this garbage, because it sells more than our own typical art.

In general, people who buy this have never seen a true work of art in front of their eyes and if they have have never understood it. Spending money on this garbage is for the masses only, which include tourists.

But we have little to offer from our native artsists. The best known, like Guillo Perez and others are just good brush people with lots of skills but hardly any imagination.

If you want excellent skills mixed with creativity and contemporary sophistication, try Raul Recio. He is represented by Carmen Rita Perez, Avenida Sarasota #20 at Torre Empresarial, phone 412-5190. Carmen Rita is the divorcing wife of Luis Alvarez Renta, the man accused of the Baninter mess.

One of Recios painting is shown in the storefront of a GNC or Diet pills shop at Bella Vista Mall. I know the name of that painting is "Todo Tiene Su Nombre VIII, which is part of a series with the same name. If you can get your hands in one the paintings from that series you will get a real work of art. This guy is a bargain now, but has the best future of any DR artist.

Dominican Artist

Hello everyone,
I am glad to find people that are in touch with the art in the Dominican Republic. I hope some of you can help me. I need names and ways of contacting anyone hosting a TV show where painting demostrations (in a project or technique format) can be done. Also, contact for painting seminals in the city, Puerto Plata and the east coast. The goal is to project, promote and educate Dominicans in the Decorative and Faux Finish Painting techniques in a fun, easy, rewarding way by experienced and talented latin artists.
Can anyone help me?

I have some Brito and Bido paintings- americans seem to respond well to those!

Big fan of brito here. In fact I was just at the unveiling of his latest work. The official poster of the Grand prix Americas. I put a bid on the Original but I am sure it is going to go for more than I am willing to pay. Oh well at least I got a signed litho of the work comming and have a dozen copies of the poster signed by him.

BTW Brito isn't Dominican!

I have some early work of Bido and i have a portrait of myself done by Bosch!

Fred,

Link wouldn't come up.

We are in discussions with Brito to have him paint a new Lamborghini race car that will compete in the American LeMans series. This will be the first time Lambo has offically raced and Romero is very keen on the idea.
He also painted 6 race helmets that are going to also be auctioned off for charity. I put a bid of $1500 the first day. 3 days later it was up to $12,000. Not ready to pay that amount for Art.

Pablo,

I have a friend who lives in our neighborhood in Santo Domingo. She is a painter who has not found a commercial oulet for her work. I was just looking at a couple of her watercolors a couple of days ago. They were excellent. They were pictures of life in the country, but they had CHARACTER. They were pictures that carried a message. They were not just the meaningless chatter that fills most tourist shops. If you want, I can get her permission and send you pictures of a couple of her works.
