Me and some friends will be visiting the DR at the end of august. We will be spending our holidays mostly in Puerto Plata & Santa Domingo. We would like to know some names of restaurants where we can eat real good local food. We also want to know what tasty food is typical Dominican.

In Puerto plata, try Esquina de Cachita; 586-8372 In Santo Domingo, try El Conuco; 686-0129

Eat lots of Sancocho, Lamb?, Mang?, Bacalao.

I like to eat food from the street vendors, but some people are afraid to, because maybe they will get sick. I go to the DR about every 2 months, and I eat everything I come across and never get sick. I don't drink tap water though.

If you are daring, go to Boca Chica and eat some of the seafood they always sell on the beach fresh. It is very tasty. Agree on the price before you accept it, as some vendors will try to get over on you.

Since you are coming from far away, you might have some initial mild upset, but just go to a "farmacia" and tell them what ails you, and they will fix you right up.

For good and inexpensive home cooking in Puerto Plata try Camacho's on Malecon Avenue, near Puerto Plata Beach Resort. DEFINETLY visit El Conuco in Santo Domingo, but be sure to practice your merengue before you go there.

I bring a bottle of Pepto Bismol with me as I have a sensitive digestive system. The staple of the DR is rice and beans. It is not like any other. I don't know if you've ever had tostones, flattened and fried green bananas. Yuca is also a staple food. It is interesting to buy a piece of can(y)a, from which we get sugar, and suck and chew the sap out. the oranges and lemons are a little different variety than the ones we have. I love guanabana, and guayaba, and mangoes in season. They have syrups poured over shaved ice that are refreshing. Bon ice creams are good. The cakes, biscochos, are made with a heavier flour than ours and are good. I'm getting hungry.

There is a local food called Mondongo that sounds real good but is an acquired taste! If you dont like fatty tissue & the insides of some unidentified animal, dont order it! lol There are tons of local restaurants along the Long Beach stretch. Try some of them out. You can always order roasted chicken (pollo) with rice and they will serve them with abechuela (bean soup). The fried plantains served with salt seems to be another staple. Enjoy, Amiga and the advice to take along some pepto bismol is a great one! Just take a couple of pills before you wander into that unknown territory of exotic DR food!!!
