The Dominican Republic IS baseball. Every little lot we see kids playing baseball -- often with makeshift equipment and on the backs of pick up trucks there are eager hopeful kids who have been recruited by scouts who hope they have the next big Major League Star. But what happens when the "lucky" ones are picked and sent to the US. Saturday Jan 26 at 3 pm The Meeting Place in Puerto Plata is having another of its continuing series of talks a showing of the lively movie "Sugar" that tells the story of a young Dominican boy who follows his dream and then deals with its realities. It will be followed by a brief discussion of the recruiting attempts by the Big Leagues and local Scouts. This is a unique opportunity to see this Dominican based film (in English). More info can be found on the website MeetingPlacePuertoPlata.com

Great movie, really depicts the many trials and tribulations well. On the documentary side "Pelotero" is also tremendous tracking Miguel Sano and other prospects through the process.

That is a fabulous film-if not a little depressing.
Well worth watching even with subtitles for those
of us not so 'habla'.

after they got beat by the Dutch a few years ago, I have trouble believing in the DR.

That was a fiasco! Guys were taking private planes from P.R. to the D.R. to party the night before the game. I think we will see a more devoted and prideful team this year. The Dutch, actually have some premium young talent, thanks in most part to Curacao.

Hey, don't talk bad about the Dutch, as a matter of fact we are good at almost anything!

Besides the Japanese and Korean, I think all teams were doing exactly the same. So that kind of evens the score, doesn't it?

What I hate to see is that most of DR players I came to admire, were actually on the juice, or cheating one way or another. Sad.
