Dr Jiminian may not be much well known among expats, but he is known with Dominicans because he’s constantly being interviewed regarding his clinic and such. He was born poor but through the years has seen an improvement (moving up socioeconomically is actually more common among Dominicans than thought, in fact a large percentage of the upper middle and almost the entirety of the lower middle class were poor households a mere 40-50 years ago and it’s common for younger Dominicans to have a much more pampered lifestyle than their parents for whom life was much more harsh.) However, he doesn’t turns his back on the remaining poor from which he came from and in Cristo Rey, a barrio of Santo Domingo, has his clinic which often gives free treatment if a poor person can’t really pay but need it.

He starts by saying that the Haitian situation in Dominican hospitals is a disaster. He uses examples of his own clinic where Haitians have been taken. Many of them have no identifying documents from anywhere (DR’sor Haiti’s). Many pregnant women arrive with no previous medical work ready to give birth and many times the women are taken when they are already in labor. The lack of a medical record means that nothing is known about the health of the woman and the pregnancy, many times resulting in avoidable deaths of the mothers and/or newborn.

He also mentions another experience he had in another clinic where there were several pregnant Haitian women and they were threatning the doctors to attend them or they will go to the media.

The sheer numbers, no form to effectively identify them, and lack of medical records are his biggest complaints.

Notice, his clinic doesn’t reject any Haitian that arrives there.
