DR lands US$30 million for mega football facility

When Covid-19 put a stop to football games around the world, the Dominican Republic was the first to reopen with international tournaments played in Santo Domingo and San Cristóbal. Several important sport events were also carried out in bubbles in Punta Cana and Santiago.

The Dominican Republic without knowing it would be earning points that led it to be the winner of a FIFA donation of US$30 million for the construction of a 100,000 square meter football complex. The complex will feature seven football fields, gyms, administrative offices, and accommodations. The site is yet to be chosen. Locations in the east of the country and central Santiago are being considered.

Diario Libre reports that to put the donation in perspective, the Miami Marlins training academy in the Dominican Republic inaugurated in October 2023 cost US$15 million.

With $30 million there is no reason why three facilities should not be constructed..I believe that $ 10 million is adequate money for each to have to pitches and good changing rooms and shade trees . Then the international sport can grow in three different areas of the country.

7 football fields is overkill. The upkeep will never happen, and 6 of the 7 will be used for parking derelict vehicles.

I can't see that it's necessary to put it near Punta Cana because of international flight connections. Isn't his supposed to be for Dominican use? The other proposed location of Santiago sounds better to me.

Don't forget Haitians. They love soccer infintesimally more that baseball.

Maybe that's why they're always behind the 8 ball.
