Rutaca Airlines, Laser Airlines, Avior Airlines, Venezolana, Turpial Airlines and SkyHigh Dominicana are all impacted by the “temporary suspension” of all direct commercial flights to and from Venezuela from Dominican airports. The Nicolas Maduro government mandated the cancellation of Venezuelan passenger flights as of 31 July 2024.

The announcement of the shutdown came after Venezuela broke off diplomatic relations and the expelled diplomatic missions of seven Latin American countries, including the Dominican Republic. These countries have requested transparency in the recent Venezuelan presidential elections that took place on 28 July 2024.

Venezuelans would regularly travel to the United States using the Dominican connection. US carriers have long been banned from Venezuelan air space.

But I checked Flight24Radar, Red Air still flys to La Romana while Sky High flys to SDQ. Something is not right here

The only airline that I see from La Romana to Caracas is Laser Airline. The last flight was July 30th. They have another flight scheduled for today but who knows if it will go.

Not only Venezuelans would regularly travel to the United States using the Dominican connection, but all Russians who live in DR or visit DR traveled via Venezuela since the war between Russia and Ukraine started, because only Cuba and Venezuela have direct flights to Russia now, but Venezuelan connection was much more comfortable, same airport in Caracas, same day flights, just a few hours between the flights. Cuban connection is much more complicated, changing airports, transfer from Varadero to Havana, one night in hotel, etc.

So this cancellation affected Russians even more than it affected Venezuelans or Dominicans.
