The spotlight will be on the Dominican Republic when the OTDYKH Leisure Moscow Fair 2020 and the OTDYKH International Russian Travel Market 2020 are held 8-10 September 2020 at the grounds of the Expocenter in Moscow, Russia. The b2b event is in its 26th year.
Event organizers say that the Dominican Republic is the most visited Caribbean destination and one of the most popular winter travel destinations for Russian travelers. The high-profile partnership in 2020 will provide a renewed opportunity for expo visitors to discover more about travel opportunities.
The OTDYKH Leisure expo traditionally attracts a big number of the winter, long haul and exotic travel destinations that cater to the Russian market. Hosting the expo in September allows industry experts to meet and negotiate right before the beginning of the season.
The Director of the DR Ministry of Tourism’s Office for Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, Galina Lyssenko, highlighted that the Dominican Republic has been participating in the Moscow tourism fair since 2002. She pointed out that in 2019, the Dominican participation won the title of “Best exhibition stand”. Their 2019 stand included 11 co-exhibitors, among which were hotels, resorts and incoming tour operators. This year they will have an exclusively designed 200m2 stand, which they will host with a bigger number of co-exhibitors.
Official data shows that from January to December last year, 6,446,036 international tourists visited the country. Russia consistently ranks among the Top 10 incoming markets for the Dominican Republic and the demand for tourism offers is high. Russia is the leading source markets from Europe.
The expo is the largest tourism event in Russia and the largest autumn event in the country. Almost 15,000 industry experts participated in the 2019 expo, with 600 exhibitors from 35 countries and 41 Russian regions.

TUI Foundation acts to protect coral reefs in the Dominican Republic
A new TUI Junior Academy has begun as a three-year initiative to improve sustainability practices. The TUI Care Foundation and The Reef-World Foundation launched on 29 January an initiative to help protect coral reefs in the Dominican Republic. The partnership will encourage environmental stewardship by bringing together key members of the community to focus on the protection of these sensitive and fundamental ecosystems.
TUI announced that over 300 people from a variety of local reef-based businesses will receive specialized training on how to work more sustainably. More than 65,000 tourists will receive information on coral reef protection and over 2,000 members of the community will also learn about reef protection through the environmental activities of Youth Ambassadors.
Thomas Ellerbeck, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the TUI Care Foundation, said: “The Dominican Republic is surrounded by extraordinary coral reefs which constitute a key component of the island’s unique natural heritage and biodiversity. Local economic activities, such as fishing, and marine life in general, rely on strong, healthy reefs. We are very excited to be launching this new project with Reef-World that brings the local community together and puts education at the very center of future environmentally sustainable solutions.”
