Is it safe to boil water and then put it into the fridge and drink it cold in the DR? Is it safe to use brita filters to drink it? What does everyone think?

Here in Bavaro we did that for a while boiling the water and using it. Approx. for 5 - 6 month, we are still around and did not fell ill somehow in that period...
But after a while we figured it to be too much effort and since then we are using the bottled water again...

That's safe anywhere in the world. Be sure to boil it long enough.
Depends where you're at in the DR. I used to drink right from the tap just outside of Bayaguana and never had a problem. I would never do that in SD. I guess you could use the Brita filter and then get it tested. But aren't the botellones cheap enough?

That kills bacteria and micro-organisms, but does not remove any metals or solids that may be in the system.
So maybe boil, then filter? Still seems like that's not as cost-effective as the botellones. The Brita filters aren't cheap and you're using fuel or electric to boil.

Fortunately, Santiago has an excellent water system. However, we do use bottled water for ice and drinking water. We use the city water for bathing, washing dishes and clothes...
But remember, we are sort of "inoculated" to most of the things here. Occasionally I will drink from the tap, and seldom have any negative effects.
Boiling water is fine and they do sell large, porcelain filters with an upper and lower chamber for removing particulates (not bacteria), and these were used for many many years here. They used to be a feature in many kitchens..

Like others have mentioned, in some places it's not the biologicals that are the problem, it's the particulate and dissolved compounds in the water that are the threat. Boiling, or treating with chlorine will kill the bios, but filtration is needed for the rest. I don't know if Brita will do the job. A combination of reverse osmosis and deionized (RO/DI) filtration will take care of it all. Filtration kits can be bought online. BUT... in the end, the bottles are easy and cheap... go with the flow... (yes.. all puns intended. lol)
