whats the legal drinking age in the Dominican Republic
I have no direct legal knowledge, per say, but when they card people at the door, going into discos, 18 years plus is what they are looking for.

You also have to be 18 to work in a bar, I think there may be a provision for prople with special permission from their parents etc.

At the beginning of the PRD's current term, the vice president was going around with a camera crew shutting down bars she found minors in. After a week or so she got bored with the project, but all the bars I know of started putting up "no minors allowed" signs around that time.

I could send my 6 year old to the store for beer

Yes I could. However, there is a "legal" age and a "drinking " age.

Kids start drinking fairly early, whether it is legal or not. Only in public places and only in places like Santo Domingo and maybe Santiago are these laws enforced.

Frankly, there does not seem to be a major drinking problem with teenagers, or at least I have not observed it.

Why do you ask???

If you could give us a specific question,we can give you a specific answer.I have taken girls as young as 15 to discos, and they drank with no questions asked! It depends on who, what, where, why, and a few more things weather they get in,and then :dead: drink.Cris Colon

The actual legal drinking age in the national territory of the Dominican Republic is 21 years, at which age you're allowed many perks, yet if you are smart you can get away with drinking about many places, the reason many Dominican teenagers don't have a drinking problem it's because it's not a big deal to have a drink there, but if your parents are stiff on rules you could get a nice beating for getting drunk or getting drunk to the house, my first time I was wasted and somehow my friends managed to make me stand in front of my house's main door, once I rang the door bell my father open it up and just gave that weird look only parents can manage to muster, I gained my sobriety in less than a second, he didn't say a word and told me to make sure the door was locked behind me and that was it, I didn't ever come home drunk after that, I would call home and tell them I'll be staying over at my friend's home, it's about respect not much more than that, but young people do drink but not to get wasted but to have fun and enjoy dancing, you can't dance merengue drunk! mission Impossible!

If you get stop by a policeman and you're drinking just keep cool and polite and be remorseful, they'll give you an earful and that should be it, if you act stupid you'll be spending the night waiting for your parents to pick you up in la chirola with some questionable characters.
