Drinking age

Hey what is the legal drinking age in the DR? Would they care if people 17 years old are drinking?

The legal drinking age is 18.

Is it enforced? It really depends on where you go. If you are buying a beer in a colmado, probably not. If you are at a bar in a tourist area, maybe. If you are a tourist, again, it probably won't be enforced. At the resorts, I doubt you will see any enforcement at all.

The drinking age is enforced heavily at the larger bars in Boca Chica for example, and there are signs posted at most every bar saying that minors are prohibited. In my opinion, the enforcement is directed against Dominicans, not tourists, but you never know.

The silver lining in that cloud (and my hair)is that I'm hitting 50 real soon. Although I don't worry about being served, I'm usually one of the oldest guys in the joint. Read Jim's sign carefully young man. Discretion is the better part of being any age.

Jim has hit the nail on the head. If you are on the north coast in a town like Sosua you most likely won't have a problem getting served as long as you aren't acting like a complete fool. Go ahead, enjoy some presidentes and cuba libres just be sensible.
