Hello all,

I need directions from Santo Domingo (Las Americas) to La Romana. I've never driven in the country before so any help would be appreciated.

I hope the Mods don't yell at me for this but I also need information on renting a car. I'm going to DR this weekend and need a rental for the week. Should I rent right from the airport? or an offsite facility.

The route from Las Americas to La Romana is easy......when you come out of the airport approach road do not take the elevated overpass to Santo Domingo but proceed straight until reaching the Santo Domingo - Boca Chica highway which is a few hundred yards further on. At the junction turn right towards Boca Chica. After passing through Boca Chica keep going straight on the same road following the signage to San Pedro de Macoris and La Romana until you reach La Romana which is about 100km from the airport. Allow 75-95 minutes for the journey

If this is your first time driving in the DR be VERY CAREFUL, once past Boca Chica the road is quite good by DR standards, but the driving is really something else. Give all trucks and buses a very W I D E berth and watch out for everything else on the road, particularly motorcycles and pedestrians crossing the road at the most unexpected moments and places.

If you are going to be doing this after dark, the best advice I, or anyone else, can give you is DON'T!!!!!!!!!

Renting a car at the airport from one of the international providers is probably the best bet.

Good Luck,

Bryan

Good info Bryanell..............

Again, try not to drive anywhere in the DR at night. It is not a pleasant experience.

Alamo/National car rental at SDQ always gets good reviews.

Last time I went they were working on the roads and I believe working on that overpass Bryan just mentioned. Now, silly question here but any tolls I should know about at least leaving the airport I don't remember paying them but things may be different.

The toll booths (peaje) are on the SD-BC highway west of the airport so you won't have them on the way from the airport to La Romana. Peaje is onlly 30 pesos for a private car or SUV and you pay when going in one direction only
