Driving in Sosua and Cabarete?

Our family, two adults and two teenage daughters are anticipating a move to Sosua or Cabarete for a year or two. Would it be feasible to lease a car or are we better to use mopeds or should we rely on taxis? I'm worried about insurance if we drive. Is this a well founded concern?

There are many posts on this board regarding the dangers of driving cars in the DR and if you look into the archives you can decide on the wisdom yourself. There was a particularly vivid post on motorcycle travel last fall, I believe, and a large number of people seem to come to untimely ends that way. In January I posted about travelling by local transportation and if you review it you will see that the guaguas and publicos are plentiful and a cheap way to get around. I suggest you use the local transportation for a while and then make up your mind.

I drive sosua-cabarete every day.
The moto conchos, public transportation (guaguas) and taxis,
are without exeption the largest group of traffic law breakers on that road.
At least if you drive your self you hold your fate a little more in your hands, not much but a little.
Riding a moto concho is a death wish.
