At a time when gold prices have surged, efforts to expand the gold production in the Dominican Republic have clashed with environmental concerns. Gold exports generate millions in taxes for the Dominican government. Earthworks publishes an update on the situation.

No one, literally no one in a political position, gives a rat's ass about the environment.
If they did the rivers would not look like submerged landfills.
Ever watch a Dominican or Haitian open a wrapper to eat something and then dispose of it.
Ever see them carry a Styrofoam container 5 feet to a garbage can ? After the last sip form their Columbus rum or Presidente beer bottle they drop it no matter where they are..

When the DR get serious about the environment they will be well on the path to fixing one of the major turnoffs to visitors.

I think it depends where you are. When I have visited Santiago, I witnessed a mom telling her little girl to throw trash in the can.

Both Puerta Plata and Santiago have less trash than Boca Chica. I know that doesn't say much but even here they are trying to make it a bit cleaner. Unfortunately, I heard that the spearhead behind the cleaning of Boca Chica, Carlos Limpieza, died a few weeks ago.

Since that has never happened anywhere in the DR yet, why would it be there?
You gotta be kidding. Haven't you looked at any of the potable water projects I've been posting for the last couple of years?

Wellington Arnaud is one of the superstars of this administration for his work on supplying potable water to communities, not to mention all of the other projects he's in charge of.

Many want to see him succeed Abinader.

Ignorant statement, my friend.

Water you would drink every day out of the tap?
On that you have to be kidding, no?

Potable means suitable for drinking; it refers to water or other liquids that are safe to consume without risk of illness.

If I am ignorant on places that have water you can safely drink from the tap in the DR provided by the local water company, then my ignorance is bliss.
