A question for those of you who live in Santo Domingo or are very familiar with it.

What are the elite neighborhoods in Santo Domingo? What is the average cost of homes in these neighborhoods? Who typically lives in these neighborhoods?

Thanks.

Your questions are very vague.

Tell us what you really want to know. Are you thinking about buying??Many wealth people chose to live in luxury Condos.Prices for the "Better" areas start at about 150 thousand US $,and go into the millions!Depending on LOCATION! CC

I agree with Criss. The "real rich" people and old money are moving into well-secured condominiums. For instance, Grullon of Banco Popular lives in Torre El Retiro. But get this, the condo fee there is over 1000 dollars a month! I think that is even higher than the Watergate co-op fee here in DC, where many of the elite of the world live!

New money probably still favors conspicuous, cheesy-looking Saddam Hussein-Palace looking construction.

Old money appreciates taste and discretion. You are probably better off not being too conspicuous

I would like to know what are considered the "nicer" neighborhoods in Santo Domingo. I am not looking for a million dollar home. I wouldn't buy one here in the DC area. Like DCFred said, an area that is tasteful and not extravagant. I've been to Arroyo Hondo and Piantini and have been told that these are some of the nicer areas; however, since I do not live there I would appreciate inputs from those with more knowledge of the area.

This depends so much on what your tastes are. I like Gazcue, it has charm but has seen better days. It is still a shady, pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood which is a rarity elsewhere in SD. Zona Colonial has character but can be noisy.

Now to the posher neighbourhoods: apart from Piantini and Arroyo Hondo you might like to look at the following:

Bella Vista and Mirador Sur - good for shops and near the main park. Mainly condos, many high rise, some with swimming pools.

La Esperilla, La Julia - Central location, mix of villas, apartment blocks.

Serralles - near to Piantini and Arroyo Hondo - new high rise apartment blocks, small green area.

La Julieta and Urbanizacion Fernandez is mainly villas and there are some quiet streets.

Los Cacigazos I am less familiar with but I am told it is exclusive.

Hope this helps.

Please "Narrow" it down for us.

Do you want a Luxery Condo,or a House with all that goes with it?

I live in Arroyo Hondo, above the ZOO.We are "surrounded" by "Barrios Calientes"! Tomorrow,if there is a "Strike" I will have to take my "Special" route to work,to avoid the "Barrios"!
I have a "Planta",a water well,and a high fence!
I have a double lot, fruit trees, lots of "Pets",room for the kids to play, but it is always "something" broken, that must be fixed! I have to buy my own propane,(I have 3 tanks!)and Diesel fuel for the "PLanta",and drinking water.(I have 15,5 gallon bottles,so the Company Truck comes to my house about every 10 days!)

But I like to be "The Boss"!(I know, hard to believe right??) so a house is "right" for me!

For many Americans,a house is just toomuch to manage! For then,if they have lots of money,I would recommend a "Condo" on the mirador South,or Anacaono/Casicasgos area.
